Did you know..... There is a whole treasure trove of behaviour information over at Veterinary Partner? Add it to your resources! Here's an article on one of my favourite cues to train dogs - "touch"! I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to add some of my thoughts and photos to this article.... https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx #behaviour #veterinary #rvt #kpactp #dogs #dogtraining #mydog #mymuse #dogsandcats #positivereinforcementworks #positivereinforcementtraining #havefunwithyourdog #animaltraining #animalbehavior #veterinarytechnician #dogs #doglover

If you're watching a tv dog trainer, use these pointers to fully understand what you're seeing. A great article!

"He's always been fine with..." Something I hear frequently from clients once behaviour gets "louder" (lunging, barking, growling, biting). For example, "he's always been fine with the cat being near his food" "Fine" is a pretty low bar in my opinion! Fine usually means the animal is just tolerating a situation. That's not a great way to feel.... In this video, Tommy is telling me in his beautifully subtle ways that he is worried about the cat, Mac, being so close to his food (orange toy). Instead of ignoring his communication, I removed the food toy and in the second video you see he's finally able to relax and no longer needs to be monitoring the safety of something he values. What are some situations your pet is just tolerating? How did you know? How can you help your pet feel better in those situations? If you need help, reach out! I'm available for virtual training & behaviour help. "When dogs are trained with methods such as leash jerks, yelling, and shock collars, they have worse welfare than dogs trained solely with food rewards, according to new research."

Spending the weekend "leveling up" at Clicker Expo! This is my first time attending and I'm hooked. So many amazing, brilliant, kind and generous speakers it's hard to choose which talks to attend live. Feeling inspired and excited to bring this learning into my work #karenpryoracademy #clickertraining #clickerexpo #kpactp #continuingeducation #positivereinforcement #tagteach #meetyourheroes #levelup

Something I'm especially proud of achieving is Fear Free Elite Certification. If you're new to the concept - Fear Free started as a movement in the veterinary world with a focus on making vet visits a positive experience and really taking into consideration the fear, anxiety and stress (FAS) of our patients. . . Fear Free isn't the sort of learning that you do once and then you're done. It's a commitment to continually learning and adapting to the animal in front of you. It'...s about shifting from "just get it done" to "how can we get this done without harm - if at all?" It is active, not passive. It is knowing that some extra time and care now will result in less time, money and stress for everyone down the road. . . This isn't a new concept by any means - just take a look at how zookeepers train animals for blood draws and other medical procedures! However, this is still a new movement in the veterinary world where holding down terrified dogs for a nail trim is a common occurrence. . . I want more for our pets! I want more for my colleagues and for pet parents. Fear Free benefits everyone . . Fear Free has something available for almost anyone working with pets - veterinary professionals, groomers, trainers, shelters and pet parents! Check out Fear Free Shelters Fear Free Pets Fear Free Happy Homes . . If you're a pet parent - ask the professionals that interact with your pet if they are certified! If you're a professional - get on board and get certified! . . #fearfreepets #fearfree #fearfreevetvisit #fearfreehappyhomes #fearfreecertifiedprofessional #fearfreetraining #veterinarytechnician #veterinarymedicine #veterinarybehavior #veterinary #behaviourismedicine See more
