Had to share this post from a group I was in..... A fitness center posted this ad stating: This summer, what do you want to be? Mermaid or Whale? ... A woman sent them an email response like this: Yesterday I saw an ad with a photo of a sculptural girl in a bikini and the phrase from this summer. What will you be? Mermaid or Whale? Answer: Whales are surrounded by friends. Whales have an active sex life, get pregnant and have beautiful babies. Whales suckle. Whales are out there roaming the seas and getting to know interesting places like Antarctica and the coral reefs of Polynesia. Whales have dolphin friends. Whales eat shrimp. Whales throw jets of water and play a lot. Whales are huge and have almost no natural predators. Whales are well settled, they are BEAUTIFUL and they are LOVED. On the contrary, mermaids DO NOT EXIST ... If they did, they would live in an existential crisis: Am I a fish or a human being? Mermaids have no children because they kill men who are enchanted by their beauty says the tales. Their reproduction would be like fish, without physical contact, without love. They are beautiful, but they always live sad and alone ... Dear academy, I prefer to be a whale. Accept who you are, the way you feel most comfortable with, dont allow trends or society to define how beautiful you are, its important to keep healthy but its also important that we embrace equality and LOVE... Feel proud of your curves because those who really matter in our lives are the ones who care about your character, values and spirit.

Dear Mr. Nick Whalen, My name is Katherine Howse, and I am a registered massage therapist (RMT). In one phone call yesterday, I lost faith in you and was very... disappointed in you as a Liberal Party candidate. Yesterday, you had a conversation with my mother about issues that are very important to her and our family. Not even one minute into the conversation you made a comment, with very little tact, which alluded to fact, that you, we're only calling for votes. She felt you rushed her off the phone because you were only looking to confirm votes, rather than being interested in what she had to say. After speaking with her yesterday, you lost at least four votes and sometimes those are the most important ones. It has come to my attention that you feel Massage Therapy is not on the same level as physiotherapy or Chiropractics. Mr. Whalen let me enlighten you; Massage Therapists are not always a spa service. We are rehabilitation specialists, such as and same as physiotherapists, chiropractors and acupuncturists. Massage Therapy is recognized by physicians and nurse practitioners, as they provide prescriptions for these services. I challenge you to get a prescription from any health care provider for a spa service or Pilates treatment. It is also my understanding that Pilates and Spa Services are not recognized by provincially and federally regulated insurance companies, as recognized health modalities. A Massage Therapist has a scope of practice as follows The practice of massage therapy is the assessment of the soft tissue and joints of the body and the treatment and prevention of physical dysfunction and pain of the soft tissues and joints by manipulation to develop, maintain, rehabilitate or augment physical function, or relieve pain (Collage of Newfoundland and Labrador, Massage Therapy Act 2005). This is the same scope of practice adopted nationally from coast to coast to coast - Canada. Correct me if I am wrong, but is that not a national issue? I feel you are ignorant to the fact that Massage Therapists are trained health professionals. Massage Therapy is partnered with other health care providers, that help people learn to walk, adapt to new joints, rehabilitation after traumatic car accidents, adaptation to various disease processes (MS), pregnancy, mental health, and treat chronic pain. After treating clients, our day does not end there, as we spend countless hours writing reports for physician such as - orthopedics, general practitioners, plastic surgeons, etc. We also provide detailed reports to lawyers, insurance companies, and workers compensation. Justin Trudeau and the liberal party has promised better access to health care, for all Canadians. This, I watched, on CBC News - the press release, and commented, on my Facebook. I wrote a detailed post regarding the red tape and national bureaucracy inhibiting RMTs, across Canada, forcing them to pay HST- taxes that are collected nationally and provincially. According to you, the liberal platform focuses, primarily, on mental health and seniors. My mother felt that you were not interested in her issues, simply because she didnt fall into either of those categories. You left her with the impression that unless youre a senior or have a debilitating mental health issue, her concerns were not important. Mr. Whalen, what are you doing for her? Nothing, up until yesterday the liberals had my vote. We marked Xs on our ballots and yesterday, and you did not get our support. Jack Harris was kind and considerate to my mother's needs. He spoke to us at length about this very issue in person and was quite willing to engage in discussion. Sincerely, Katherine Howse, RMT Former President - Newfoundland and Labrador Massage Therapy Association (NLMTA)

In honor of mental health awareness month. Don't be mad at yourself if it takes time to heal. Feel every part of that wound and work through it.

Katherine Howse, RMT 09.08.2020

How had everyone been doing with their Mental Wellness Challenge? So far Ive made a Happy Play List, dome some yoga, read some books and started a journal! Getting to the end of the month means reflecting a little on everything Ive learned about myself and my mental health! Today I am going to do number 26 from my list, spend some time outside. Who wants to join me???

Katherine Howse, RMT 09.07.2020

So I decided to start my Mental Health Wellness Challenge today, since the challenge is 31 days and June only has 30 days! Day #1 What's one thing you can change in your day that will improve your mental health?... Today, I toke a 15-minute meditation breather and spend some time soaking in the sun. This is not a typical thing for me when I am working, I am usually a power through kind of gal! This is something I am going to try to spend some more time doing this summer, as I truly enjoyed it! The sun always makes me (as it does for most people) feel better mentally. Sunlight helps to build strong bones, helps to heal skin conditions but it also helps to elevate serotonin levels. Serotonin is an important chemical found in the body called a neurotransmitter. It is manufactured in the brain and it helps us with a variety of things but most importantly (for the purpose of this post) it helps with mood. Low levels of serotonin have been linked to depression (though we do not know the true cause, this is mostly theory) and SAD (seasonal defective disorder). What did you do today to change your mental health? Tomorrow, I make a feel good playlist! Any suggestions on which songs I should add to my list?

Sometimes we all struggle with mental health. Its a topic that we all need to shed some light on. I am often reminded of that when Im working with clients. For the month of June, I challenge you to do the Mental Health Wellness Challenge! Who is with me? For every day on June we take another task from this list!!!! Lets all do some much needed mental health healing

Osteoporosis is a disease where a decrease in the bone density leads to weakness and increased risk of fractures (also known as breaks). Most of my clients know I am a huge advocate for yoga as a wonderful form of relaxation, strengthening and toning up. Yoga increases flexibility, strength, immunity. It decreases muscle hypertonicity (or tension) and stress levels. As with any form of exercise yoga can have some risks. If you have osteoporosis or osteopenia it might be worth having a chat with a health professional (or yoga instructor) to make sure you dont put yourself at risk of an injury. Modifying poses and listening to your body is really important!
