FEET ARE ONE OF THE MOST TICKLISH PARTS OF THE BODY. There’s a good reason for that: Humans have nearly 8000 nerves in our feet and a large number of nerve endings near the skin. Having ticklish feet can be a good sign: reduced sensitivity can be an indicator of neuropathy.

In the era of an aging population, the likelihood is greater than ever that you may find yourself caring for one or both of your parents. This can be overwhelming and include a lot of details you never had to previously consider. In the juggling of tasks, its not uncommon for something as routine as foot care to be forgotten. While its not as immediately life-threatening as forgetting say, heart medication, foot care for the elderly can play a part in the comfort and wel...l-being of your parent. Here are some tips to keep in mind regarding their foot care: Wash between the toes. Take a wash cloth or gauze pad, wet with warm soapy water, and run it between the toes. Swelling and joint contractures of the toes causes dry skin and debris to get trapped between the toes. Cleaning this out can reduce the risk of maceration or break down of the skin in the toe spaces and will increase comfort. 1) Dry well between the toes. After that special attention youve given by cleaning between the toes, be sure to dry between the toes. The same swelling and stiffness that traps the debris, also traps the moisture. Over time, athletes foot and other infections can set in. Keeping it dry between the toes will decrease that likelihood. 2) Moisturize the skin. Dry, cracking skin is more prone to infection, pain and bleeding. The dry skin edges can catch on socks or bedding, then pull and tear. Moisturizing daily and especially after bathing improves the texture and quality of the skin. But here is where you need to ignore the space between the toes as we dont want to increase the moisture in those spaces. 3) Look for unusual skin lesions or colors. While you are caring for the feet, look for signs of trouble. Sometimes sensation is dulled with disease or aging, and pain that would normally alert us to seek medical attention is no longer giving that clue. 4) Check out the toenails. Nails can become thickened or very curved as the years pass. At times they curl around the toe tips and cut into the skin, or jut out abruptly towards the adjacent toe. You may not be able to adequately care for them with drugstore instruments. In order to avoid injury, seek help for those unusually shaped or thickened nails. If you require guidance or assesment/care for your parent please call (403) 382-8776.

All Toes on Deck: Tips for Protecting Feet from the Heat One perk of a beach-bound vacation is knowing you can lounge happily with your toes dangling in the warm weather, shoe-free with the sand at your feet. But alas, the dream does come with its own set of tootsie troubles. "Even if you are just lying still on your back soaking up the rays, your feet are still vulnerable," says American Podiatric Medical Association member Jane Andersen, DPM. "You can seriously sunburn your...Continue reading

DRY CRACKED HEEL & TOMATO ANALOGY Consider a tomato on the floor ... when you push on it from above, it wants to expand out sideways ... eventually the skin cracks. This is what happens to the normal fat pad under your heel ... as your body weight pushes down, the fat wants to expand sideways and the pressure on the skin to crack is increased. If the weight is excessive (eg prolonged standing) and the skin is not supple (eg callus and/or dry) and nothing is helping hold the t...he fat pad under the foot (eg open backed shoes) ... do you get the picture? Some people tend to have a naturally dry skin that predisposes them to the cracks. The thickened dry skin (callus) around the heel that is more likely to crack is often due to mechanical factors that increase pressures in that area (eg the way you walk). Other factors that can be involved in the cause of cracked heels include: 1) Prolonged standing (at work or home, especially on hard floors) 2) Being overweight (this increases the pressure on the normal fat pad under the heel, causing it to expand sideways - if the skin is not supple and flexible, the pressures to crack are high) open back on the shoes (this allows the fat under the heel to expand sideways and increases the pressure to crack) 3) Some medical conditions predispose to a drying skin (eg autonomic neuropathy in those with diabetes leads to less sweating; 4) An underactive thyroid lowers the bodys metabolic rate and there is a reduction in sweating, leading to a dryness of the skin) skin conditions (eg psoriasis and eczema) Call Now and book a Foot Assessment & Advanced Foot Treatment. Most people take their feet for granted, until pain or problems such as blisters or calluses develop. But its important to be kind to your feet and take care of thembefore problems ariseand to treat existing problems before they limit your ability to function. Here are three important reasons for you to take care of your feet and practice good foot hygiene. Quality of life... Quality of life/ability to function. Your quality of life is directly related to your ability to be self-sufficientcapable of performing activities of daily living such as walking, shopping, visiting friends and family, working and playing. If your feet hurt or you have other foot problems, you are unlikely to function at your best. If you modify your gait to avoid a painful bunion, for example, your posture and balance will be affected, making you more vulnerable to more chronic pain and even falling. Productive work It goes without saying that good foot health is important if your job demands that you be on your feet for any significant amount of time. Even if you spend most of your time at your desk, you still have to get up occasionally; in fact, to avoid neck and shoulder pain associated with sitting at a computer, and to prevent blood from pooling in your feet, it is vital that you do stand up and walk around at least once an hour. Poor foot health can harm work performance, resulting in lost time, lost productivity, and lower job efficiency and effectiveness. Regular physical activity A large body of research confirms the importance of physical activity to overall health, especially as we get older. The latest government recommendations for all adults (including those 65 and older) who generally are fit and have no limiting health conditions is, at the least, 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (e.g., brisk walking) every week and resistance training on two or more days a week. For many people, thats daunting enough without adding foot problems to the mix. Of course, any amount of physical activity is better than none, but with poor foot health, you may be less likely to engage in even a minimal amount of physical activity. The less you do, the less you can do. The result: loss of muscle mass and strength; reduced endurance; and higher risk of diseases related to a sedentary lifestyle, including diabetes, heart disease, and cognitive decline. Foot care and Hygiene Taking care of your feet now can help prevent foot problems down the road. If you already have foot problems, good foot hygiene will help keep those problems in check, and may help some of them disappear altogether.
