I love seeing articles that challenge some of our widely accepted health advice. Here's some food (or water?!) for thought on the old adage of the need for 8 glasses of water per day. If you're thirsty, drink. Simple! ... https://peterattiamd.com/do-i-really-need-8-glasses-of-wat/

WHAT’s IN MY FRIDGE . Another new veggie in our @simcoeharvest box. Carosello Italian cucumber! (Or is it a melon?) . This fuzzy green guy tastes pretty much the same as your grocery store variety english cucumber, but a little bit of googling tells me it’s actually considered to be a melon.... . A young carosello tastes more like cucumber, while a mature one more like melon. I washed and peeled mine and used it to make a delish greek salad for dinner tonight. . Any carosello expert out there?! . . #food #nutrition #newfood #getyourveggies #veggies #thyroid #hypothyroidism #hashimotosdisease #hashimotosthyroiditis See more

WHAT’S IN MY FRIDGE . These may look like a weird fingerling potato, but it’s actually a jerusalem artichoke! . This root veggie is high in vitamins, minerals and iron. It’s been studied for improving blood sugar levels, and is mega high in gut loving prebiotics... . Also called Sunchokes, these beauties came in our @simcoeharvest box this week - just one of the reasons I love veggie boxes is trying new foods and flavours I probably never would have picked up myself at the grocery store . These beauties will be roasted with EVOO and garlic and enjoyed with dinner . . . #prebiotics #fiber #gutlover #naturopath #nutrition #eatyourveggies See more

WHAT’S IN MY FRIDGE . It’s time for another fun segment of what’s in my fridge! . What is this?!?!... . It’s a celery root, also called celeriac. It came this week in our @simcoeharvest box and I’m going to be honest I have no idea what to do with it! . Celeriac is a root vegetable similar to parsnip or turnip often used in soups, stews, as a hash, or mashed as a potato sub-in. It’s high in gut loving fibre and prebiotics, but is actually a low FODMAP veggie. It’s also high in vitamins (like B6) and minerals. . It may not be the prettiest vegetable but I’m looking forward to making something delicious with it. Do you have any favourite recipes or ways to use celeriac?? I would to hear them. . . . #rootvegetables #celeriac #fodmap #ibs #eatlocal #barrienaturopath #thyroidnd #thyroidhealing #hypothyroidism #hashimotos See more

Okay okay, before you hear me out I will admit my chocolate bias. I love it. A lot. I have chocolate almost every day. So the thought of telling someone not to eat chocolate just goes against every fiber of my being. If you've been following my page for a while you've probably noticed I'm not a fan of restrictive one-size-fits all diets. So when a patient asks me if they can 'still eat chocolate', I say "heck yes!" You don't have to stop eating chocolate. Just ...eat 'better' chocolate. Here's what I mean by 'better'. Dark chocolate (>70%) has more cocoa and less sugar, dairy, and 'other' ingredients. In most situations, it's these non-cocoa ingredients that may be causing issues. In fact, cocoa has many potential health benefits! It's high in minerals like iron, magnesium, zinc and copper. It also has high amounts of polyphenols and flavonoids which are anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory. The benefits of cocoa have been studied on heart health, mood enhancement, blood pressure, and even diabetes and weight management. So pick a dark chocolate, cocao nibs, or cocao powder and get your chocolate fix. Eat it for the health benefits or just because (like me) you <3 it. (and yes, I was eating chocolate while writing this post) #chocolatelover #cocao #cocoa #chocolate #polyphenols #flavonoids #catechins #antioxidant #antiinflammatory #nutrition #naturopath #thyroidnd #naturalthyroid See more

This was a neat little study on a combination of spirulina, curcumin and boswelia on benign (non cancerous) thyroid nodules. Join our Rooted Community for 7 days of Gratitude challenge starting Monday March 30th! We are evolutionarily wired to see the negative. It's just how are brains are made. Unfortunately, it can also make us focus more on what's NOT going right. We dwell on past events, worry about the future, and often our days can look more 'bad' than 'good'. Many members of our community that we have talked to in the last week are experiencing the same thing - fear, loss of control, anxiety..., overwhelm, worry about the future, uncertainty about what's to come. Gratitude can be your anchor to spot the joy. For 7 days we'll be sharing 1-3 things that we're grateful for in text, picture, or gif! We hope you join in and spread the joy and positivity. Join our group below to get in on the gratitude action! Hope to see you there :) https://www.facebook.com/groups/rooteds7daysofgratitude

More research supporting the importance of Vitamin D for hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's disease. This 2020 study looked at over 5000 patients with Hashimoto's disease. Those with Hashimoto's had lower levels of vitamin D. When Vitamin D levels were raised, they saw an improvement in TSH, FT4 and FT3 levels. Vitamin D can help to support your thyroid hormone levels and reduce your thyroid antibodies. If you haven't had your Vitamin D tested, ask your MD or ND for this simple b...lood test so you know how much supplementation you need. More isn't always better! https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/32117049

Thyroid antibodies that won't come down? Consider testing for B. Hominis. Blastocystis Hominis (Blasto for short) is a very common digestive parasitic infection that's found in many of us. Blasto may be linked to certain health conditions. In this recent study, those with Blasto had higher levels of IL-17, which is an inflammatory cytokine involved in the process of Hashimoto's Disease. Once Blasto was tested for and eradicated in those with Hashimoto's Disease, IL-17 decre...ased AND so did TPO antibodies. It also improved TSH! Blasto can be tested with a simple stool test through your local lab. Testing for parasites is best done with 3 separate stool samples. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/32128107

Did you know that there is a link between Hashimotos disease and thyroid cancer? . Yes, having Hashimotos seems to increase the risk of certain types of thyroid cancer - specifically papillary thyroid cancer. . Autoimmune thyroid disorders like Hashimotos increase inflammation within the thyroid gland. And chronic inflammation is a risk factor for cancer ... . Signs and symptoms of thyroid cancer include thyroid nodules (lumps or bumps), swelling, trouble swallowing or feeling like something is stuck in your throat, chronic cough, hoarseness, or other changes in voice. . If you have Hashimotos disease you should be screened for the above symptoms, have your thyroid palpated by a professional, and be referred for a thyroid ultrasound. . I recommend almost all my Hashimotos patient to have a screening / baseline ultrasound performed. An ultrasound is the best way to identify nodules or lumps. Most are benign (not harmful) however if they are a certain size or look a certain way then a biopsy should be done to rule out thyroid cancer. . Have you ever had a thyroid ultrasound? . . . https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30081426-thyroid-autoimmun/ . https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22931861-both-thyroid-auto/ . #thyca #thyroidcancer #thyroidultrasound #ultrasound #hashimotos #hashimotosdisease #cancer #inflammation #autoimmune

Hashimotos disease is commonly associated with atrophic gastritis and celiac disease (2 other autoimmune conditions of the gut) These gut conditions can lead to multiple nutrient deficiencies, anemias, and poor absorption of medications. Those with Hashimotos (and I would argue Graves disease too) should be screened for potential autoimmune conditions of the digestive system as well.... https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/31864909/

GUYS, ITS NOVEMBER. I have a hard time with November. Last year the weather was so grey and it hit me extra hard. My sweet husband drove around for 3 hours one day trying to find me a light therapy lamp. Light therapy lamps work by supporting our circadian rhythm and neurotransmitters. If you experience seasonal affective disorder (SAD), low mood and fatigue over the fall and winter, light therapy could help ... Heres what you need to know: Many light therapy lamps arent strong enough. Look for a lamp that emits 10 000 lux of brightness when youre sitting 2 feet away - and that is UV filtered Get 15-30 minutes per day as soon as possible after waking up. Dont use later in the day or before bed as the light is stimulating and will prevent melatonin production. The light needs to hit your eyes, but dont look directly into it. If you have any eye conditions you should see your optometrist before starting use. Have you tried a light therapy lamp? Would you? Happy November everyone! See more

Remember when you were a child? Or maybe you have a kid or two at home? Bedtime is a serious process. Wind down. Bath time. Read a few books. Snuggles and maybe a back rub. Then off to dreamland Mess with the routine and you mess with the sleep! . We seem to intuitively know that babies and kids need quiet time before snooze-ville, so why do we expect that us adult counterparts can go-go-go all day long, crawl into bed, and fall (and stay!) asleep all night long??? . Our br...ains are running at a 100 miles an hour most of the day - we cant expect it to just shut off immediately the moment were lying in bed. #sorrynotsorry . So put yourself to bed like a baby. Foster a bed-time routine and stick to it. Give yourself some wind down time before bed (TV or scrolling IG doesnt count!). Choose a before bed activity that relaxes your brain - yoga, reading, sex , or a walk around the block. .
