There are both strengths and challenges for those of us who are highly sensitive people and/or empaths. Some of the key strengths include: Feelings all emotions more deeply, the lows but also the highs. Being moved by the beautiful and touching moments in life. ... Being driven by a sense of purpose and meaning. Wanting to make a difference, to make meaning out of life. With a "good enough childhood" HSP are no more likely to struggle than anyone else. We are more aware of subtleties, we often can read between the lines and catch underlying meaning and intention and this can be an advantage in communication. We are deep processors, and when we support our processing needs it can help us to make good decisions and to be happy with the decisions we make. We also benefit more from healing experiences. Research has found that up to half of those in therapy are HSP. We benefit and heal in supportive environments and relationships. What are your favourite strengths in being and HSP and Empath? For me it is my intuition and how this guides me in my life and work with clients.

Intuition will show us the next right step- but not the fully picture. Intuition is our personal compass for our own souls path. It is not linear or clear. The purpose isn't always what we think it is. It is about the journey over the destination. ... For example: We might be drawn to job, not for the job itself but to meet a soulmate there. For a connection that leads to something else. There can be many potentials in different experiences. The key is to learn to trust, to follow each step, learning to surrender to a wiser part of yourself along the way

Mental health is a rising concern as we head further into the first lock down during a pandemic. There is a growing need for services and supports. Yet calling yourself a "mental health professional or expert" does not make you one unless you actually have the training, experience or supervision to back it up. I have major concerns about coaches or other practitioners rebranding themselves during this time to suddenly be "psychology" or "mental health experts". ... Becoming a Registrered Mental health professional is a long and rigours process for a reason. There is a basic level of training and experience that really needs to be in place to support vulnerable people who look to you as an "expert". For the general public please do your due diligence in investigating someone's credentials, experience and training. There are protected titles (such as Registered Psychologist, Registered Social Worker, etc) that you cannot use unless you are actually registered and have met a certain standard. There are other titles that anyone or their dog could use but does not give them any real credibility or expertise. Please be clear on your actual training and experience to avoid doing harm. (Picture of my dog, he’s my ‘emotional support animal - not actually an ESA ‘ but he’s is not a ‘mental health expert’).

A quick note regarding in-person appointments in light of the announcements of further restrictions in Alberta: Psychological services have remained an essential service throughout the pandemic. The current guidelines from the College of Alberta Psychologist and Psychologists Association of Alberta and AHS requirements are that in-person sessions are still an option (with COVID protocols and screening). ... Given the current restrictions and guidelines I am asking client’s to self screen to determine if: their concerns are urgent or could become urgent without support and if tele-health is not able to meet their therapeutic needs. (This can include but is not limited to: urgent concerns, high risk, situations where it is not safe at home or where there is no privacy or stable internet connection, etc). If you know you want to work with me but you are unsure about tele-health I am so confident in it’s effectiveness (based on real client feedback and years of experience) that I am also offering the option to try a tele-health session (secure online video or phone session) at no risk. I will check in at about 15-20 minutes and if you are finding it doesn’t work for you we can reschedule for an in-person session with no charge for the session up that point and the regular cancelations fee’s would also be waived. I have a couple more spots for new client's in the New Year. (After these spots are filled I will still be accepting new clients but wait times will depend on the next openings). Email me @info@katieturner if you are interested in learning more.
