"Sexual harassment is not about sex, it's about power, and about what somebody does to you to try and take away your power." Gretchen Carlson

Was there an event that stood out to you, as the event that shaped how we think about sexual violence?

There is no "right way" to respond to experiencing violence. Only your way. Learn more about how our bodies and minds react to trauma by visiting SurvivorToolKit.ca . . #survivortoolkit #ksac #KawarthaSexualAssaultCentre

Thank you to the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough for bringing India Arie's new song "Breathe" to our meeting about Gender Equity this morning ... a beautiful anti-racism message to ground our community services in intersectional feminism. An important Monday message to share: https://youtu.be/uM4zzIIlibw

CW// Sexual assault committed by partner, and reconciliation "We followed a strict policy of being honest, and this also came with a certain exposure, an open-chested vulnerability... The seismic effects of sexual violence were spoken aloud and felt, face-to-face.... But, had I not found a way out of the hatred and anger, I'm not sure I'd be standing here today." Thordis Elva & Tom Stranger

"The recent Statistics Canada report that in 2019 almost 70% of cadets at the nation’s two military academies witnessed or experienced unwanted sexual behaviours is only the latest such report to show a prevalence of sexual misconduct in national military academies around the world."

THIS is what it looks like to be a good male role model. Being a man is not something that can be taken away from you, your gender is not something that can be taken away from you. I'm happy to see Logan Paul being more conscious about his content and challenging harmful norms. I hope his development continues! "...Harry Styles wearing a dress in a field, that ain't manly bro." "Bro, why? What is manly to you? What does it mean? Is manly being comfortable in your own skin, I mean being comfortable with who you are, regardless of what people think about what you wear?"

We have nothing to lose from dropping the limiting, and ultimately damaging standard held by "machismo". Be who you are, you are man enough! Men and women deserve better than a masculine culture of dominance which churns out broken men. http://remakingmanhood.com/

CW: Body dysmorphia Here's another reason to critique beauty standards, and stop adhering ourselves to arbitrary standards for being "a man". You are man enough, and this is not dependant on whether you work out! "Increasingly, masculinity in modern culture represents not what you do, but how you look. So, the value that society has placed on being muscular may explain why muscle dysmorphia is more common in men."

In honour of #WomensHistoryMonth we are celebrating an #IndigenousFigure Jean Goodwill: "[She was] a Cree woman from the Little Pine First Nation, was the firs...t Indigenous person in Saskatchewan and one of the first in Canada to become a registered nurse. When Goodwill was young she contracted tuberculosis and spent a lot of time in and around hospitals and medical workers, which influenced her to become a nurse. In the earlier part of her career, Goodwill worked in rural Saskatchewan and also Bermuda, focusing on helping people in need. Goodwill’s interest in political and community issues grew when she returned to Canada. She helped found the Aboriginal Nurses Association of Canada and served as its president from 1983 to 1990. She was the first Indigenous women to serve as a special advisor to the minister of National Health and Welfare in the federal government and also worked with the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development. She taught at the University of Regina, was a Canadian Public Health Association board member and was served a term as president of the Canadian Society for Circumpolar Health." Pandemic or Not, Mental Health Supports Are Only a Phone Call Away When youth are struggling to maintain their emotional and social health, Peterborough Youth... Services (PYS) provides respectful, professional, and therapeutic services to get things back on track. With the pandemic, PYS clients and staff moved to online and telephone-based service delivery. And when some in-person services resumed in June, many new protocols were implemented to keep everyone safe. It has been all hands on deck and every staff person, board member and volunteer have risen to the challenge. With these service delivery changes, there has also been a rise in mental health needs as the pandemic lingers with some youth seeking help for the first time. Last spring, a grant from the COVID-19 Community Response Fund strengthened the capacity of the Clinical Counselling team by contributing to Clinical Counsellor staff costs. This is a good news story, but more needs to be done. This fall, donations to the COVID-19 Community Response Fund will provide grants to eligible applicants through the Vital Community Grants program supporting the efforts of local charities as they recover from the initial impacts of COVID-19.
