We have had a number of Leptospirosis cases in this last 2 weeks. More than we have seen all summer. Leptospirosis is an infectious disease caused by a type of bacteria called Leptospira. The disease causes serious damage to the kidney and liver, and may be fatal in severe cases. Bacteria are passed in the urine of infected animals and can survive in the environment for long periods of time in warm, stagnant water or moist soil. Wild animals, including skunks, raccoons, opos...sums, rats, wolves, and deer, can spread infection to dogs. This disease is also Zoonotic which means it can be spread to humans, so it is important to be very careful when handling these pets. After infection, bacteria multiply in the bloodstream and then move into the tissues. They concentrate in the liver and kidney, causing extensive damage to these organs. If you think your dog is at risk of contracting leptospirosis; talk to your regular vet about the vaccine. See more

For this weeks Frequent Flyer Friday were going to be talking about; Bloat, also known as gastric dilatation volvulus or GDV. This is the mother of all emergencies in veterinary ER’s, it can cause death in a matter of hours if left untreated and even with aggressive veterinary care it can still have a poor prognosis. GDV is essentially when the stomach fills with air and twists on itself, effectively cutting off blood supply and sealing the exit of the stomach which normal...ly allows gasses and food to pass through. The now trapped gasses distend the stomach and causes a painfully bloated appearance. The poor blood supply and involvement of other major organs like the spleen can cause things like hypovolemic shock and produce deadly toxins in the bloodstream. Treatment is surgical intervention to rotate the stomach back into its intended position. Once we have the stomach back in place, a gastropexy is done to essentially anchor the stomach to the abdomen wall to prevent further twists. Surgery is not without risk and there can be many complications. Can I prevent this from happening? There is still a lot to be learned about GDV, the at risk dogs tend to be large deep chested breeds such as; Great Danes, German Shepherds, Poodles ect. There also seems to be a genetic factor, if your dog’s littermate or parent has had GDV, It would be fair to assume your dog is at higher risk. Ultimately we don’t 100% know why some dogs have this issue and some don’t, so it’s best to be vigilant if you have an at risk dog. Another option for at risk pets is a prophylactic gastropexy. This is where we surgically anchor the stomach to the abdomen wall to prevent a torsion, this can be done by your vet during an elective procedure like a spay or neuter. Symptoms can appear quickly, and will usually include one or more of the following: A swollen, hard belly Retching but not able to vomit Drooling Pain in abdomen Other signs of distress such as panting and restlessness If you think your pet may be suffering from GDV it is very important to have them assessed by a veterinarian as treatment needs to be started ASAP See more

Have you heard of xylitol? It's an ingredient that is present in some dental products and human food but can present problems for your dog if ingested.

We have seen quite a few lyme positive dogs in the last 2 months! With our unusually greener winters some vets are now recommending year round flea/tick preventions. Please talk to your regular vet about the best options for you, we love seeing your pets but this can be a painful disease and prevention is key!
