Pack it in. Pack it out. Keeping our environment clean is all of our responsibilities. Please make use of the waste receptacles at the #giffordcauseway and #gannonsnarrows and anywhere you're going this weekend to help ensure a #cleanmarine. www.ptbocounty.ca/cleanmarine

Packing for camp/camping? Please leave your wood at home! Moving firewood can spread insects and diseases, including invasive ones like beech bark disease (pict...ured) and emerald ash borer. (In fact, it’s illegal to move wood out of areas regulated for specific pests.) Beech bark disease is caused by a combination of an invasive scale insect and a fungus. It affects mostly larger stems, weakening the tree and making it more susceptible to other stresses, and will girdle and kill the tree. Emerald ash borer is an invasive beetle. Its larva burrow into the bark of ash trees, feeding on and girdling the softwood underneath, and eventually killing the tree. Do our forests a favour and don’t move firewood of any species. Instead, get firewood where you plan to use it. For more about these and other forest pests and diseases, visit https://www.ontario.ca//forest-health-pests-diseases-and-s. #MNRFScience See more

TICKS - We Hate Them!!! Peterborough Public Health has advised the first Lyme disease-positive tick of the season has been identified by Peterborough Public Hea...lth. The infected tick was discovered as part of Peterborough Public Health’s recent active surveillance work conducted in Petroglyphs Provincial Park. Residents are reminded to be tick smart and take precautions when going into any wooded and grassy areas, especially those with known tick populations. Further information is provided in the attached news release. Also attached is a photo depicting Jordan Shorey from the Vector Borne Disease Program, dragging for ticks earlier this year as part of PPH’s surveillance program. The best way to determine if a tick can carry Lyme disease is to determine just what kind of tick it is (there are many) by submitting a photograph of it to the website www.etick.ca. The have a mobile app making submissions even easier. For more information on tick prevention and Lyme Disease you can visit the Peterborough Public Health Tick & Lyme Disease webpage: https://www.peterboroughpublichealth.ca//ticks-and-lyme-d/
