Around the World from A to Z, Week 16 - P Featured Destination: PERU Pachacamac Fortress, the Incas' largest coastal city at the time of the conquest.... This archaeological site is located southeast of Lima, Peru, in the Valley of the Lurín River. First settled in 200 AD, well before the Incas, it was an important sacred site, oracle and burial ground which was visited by ancient Andean cultures as well as the Incas. Much of the site was damaged and destroyed over the centuries, but excavations have revealed many artifacts and some surviving parts of buildings. Reconstructed buildings have been built using the same method used by the Incas but may not necessarily be a true replica of the original buildings. #AroundTheWorld #Peru #Pachacamac #TravelInspiration #UntilWeCanTravelAgain

On this day in history (October 16th), Max Bygraves, Robert Urquhart, Angela Lansbury, Emile Ford (first black male singer to top the UK charts), C.F. Turner, Suzanne Sommers, Tim Robbins, Gary Kemp, John Mayer, Naomi Osaka, and a whole bunch more famous and millions of not so famous people, share the birthday with me! Happy birthday to them all. Also on this day in history, in 1384, a woman was crowned King of Poland!... That’s right - king not queen! Jadwiga, aka Hedwig, was the first female monarch of the Kingdom of Poland. Of Hungarian descent, she was only ten years old when her father, who was King of both Hungary and Poland, died. Her older sister, Catherine, who was Poland’s intended monarch had tragically died at the age of seven, so Jadwiga was chosen as Poland’s next monarch, while her eldest sister Mary, became Hungary’s new monarch. Unfortunately, Jadwiga’s reign was short-lived, lasting until her death in 1399 at the young age of 25. During her tragically short life, she lost both parents and her two sisters by the time she was a young teen, and then, shortly before her own death, her 22-day-old daughter did not survive. During her short reign, however, she became renowned for giving back to the people of Poland, which led to her being called one of the greatest monarchs by historians and being canonized by Pope John Paul II, Poland’s first Pope. She was a humanitarian and philanthropist, supporting hospitals, churches and schools, and wanting to enable education for all her people, even after her death she bequeathed the proceeds from the sale of her jewellery to finance the restoration of the University of Kraków which had fallen into disrepair. If you visit Krakow and on your travels you find yourself at the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, lookout for the footprint embedded in the church floor. She apparently gifted the stonemason with some jewellery from her foot and left her footprint in the plaster, becoming a symbol of her generosity which led to her becoming a saint. #onthisdayinhistory #jadwiga #hedwig #krakow #poland #hungary #easterneurope #traveltrivia

On this day in history (October 15th) in 1952, Henri Cartier-Bresson, published his book, "The Decisive Moment. Why is this significant? Henri Cartier-Bresson was a pioneering photojournalist from France who recorded everyday life on the streets of Paris through his lens which he published in his book The Decisive Moment.... Cartier-Bresson was one of the first photographers to use 35mm film (those born after 1994 probably won’t know what that is ) and a small portable camera, which enabled him to blend in with the crowd. Travelling the world, he enjoyed immersing himself in the environment, capturing The Decisive Moment. His book sits on many a photographer’s bookshelf. It’s through Cartier-Bresson’s spontaneous and candid photographs, and those by other photo-journalists who followed in his footsteps, that we have learnt so much about everyday life and different cultures around the world. He captured the meaning beneath outward appearance and his book led the way and taught future photo-journalists, as well as travellers, to immerse themselves in the environment and capture the essence of everyday life around the world. Pictured is a candid street scene in Paris but not by Cartier-Bresson. #OnThisDayInHistory #Photography #HenryCartierBresson #StreetPhotography #CulturalCommunities #TravelPhotography #Travel

Did you know...The Caribbean is home to three of the worlds smallest snakes? At 3.94 inches (10 cm), the Barbados Threadsnake (Tetracheilostoma carlae), which can be found in Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, is the smallest. It is followed closely by the two-lined blind snake (Tetracheilostoma bilineatum) at 4.5 inches (11 cm), which is endemic to Martinique in the Lesser Antilles and, until 2008, was thought to be the smallest snake in the world.... The third smallest snake is the Saint Lucia Threadsnake (Tetracheilostoma breuili) which can be found on Maria Islet. Similar to the two-lined blind snake, Saint Lucias smallest snake is 4.7 inches (119 mm) and is endemic to the Caribbean island. These tiny reptiles burrow underground and are harmless. You could literally wrap one around your little finger. I do not have a picture of these snakes but I do have a picture of the Caribbean! This is a beautiful white sand beach in Antigua! #Caribbean #Barbados #Antigua #Barbuda #Martinique #SaintLucia #TravelTrivia #SmallestSnakeInTheWorld

Did you know...Canada has a trail that extends from one side of the country to the other and all the way to the Arctic? Yes, the Great Trail of Canada meanders 27,000 km from the east coast of Newfoundland all the way to the west coast of British Columbia, crossing all 10 provinces, and then detours northwards through the Northwest Territories to the Arctic Ocean. The Great Trail is a series of hiking trails, footpaths, rail trails, and boardwalks, crossing every type of lan...dscape imaginable, including urban, mountains, plains, lakes and even frozen tundra. You can choose to hike bike, horseback ride, ski or snowmobile, but to trek the entire trail, you would also need a kayak or canoe and a paddle at some point, as there are also water trails. Created by the Trans Canada Trail, a nonprofit organization, and its partners, the goal of the trail was to connect Canadians with Canada and nature. The trail, which took almost 25 years to complete by a volunteer team, is said to be the largest volunteer project ever. It is also the longest recreational trail in the world, in fact it was the longest trail even before it was completed in 2017. Part of the project was to erect signage the entire length of the trail to help users navigate it. There is also an interactive map on the Great Trail website with information about each section of the trail, such as distance, trail type and setting, as well as information on points of interest along the route. If you had enough free time, would you attempt to traverse the entire trail? Pictured is the east coast of Newfoundland on the Avalon Peninsula. #TravelTrivia #Canada #GreatTrail #GreatTrailOfCanada #LongestTrailInTheWorld #CoastalTrail #Avalon
