Do you know not all acrylics are made equal? Have you ever wonder why your nails feel different when your nails were done at different places? The difference might not be significant and goes away the second or third day but the long-term effect might not. There are many reasons why your nails feel different but one of the most significant reasons is the product that was used.... What's that you might ask? There are two types of acrylic liquids. One is made with MMA - Methyl Methacrylate and the other is made with EMA - Ethyl Methacrylate. MMA is banned in cosmetic products because it is very harmful and can cause cancer. Long-term use of MMA will make your nails yellow and brittle. Due to its lack of adhesiveness to the natural nails, a lot of time your nail tech has to take more of your natural nails living it a lot thinner. Hence sometime after you got your nails done, your nail beds are sore for a day or two. EMA is safer to use on nails and is approved to be used in nail products. It is healthier for your nails as it doesn't require as rough as a nail surface as MMA to adhere to your nails. So MMA is illegal and bad for the nails, why do you think some nail techs still use it? The answer is MMS is cheap; generally 5x 10x as cheap compare to EMA. Not every cheap place will use MMA but if it's too good to be true, it generally is. That also doesn't mean expensive places don't try to cut costs. There are a few red flags that you can look out for when getting your nails done: MMA has a pungent fruity odour Your fingers itch, hurt, or burn after your nail services MMA is extremely hard after it solidified (it can lift your whole natural nails off if break) Your natural nails turn yellow after a while MMA is hard to file off When soaking off, MMA has a very gooey glue-like consistency and it takes a long time to soak off. When in doubt, ask your nail tech what they use. If they can't provide you with the details, run. YOUR HEALTH IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN SAVING A FEW BUCK
