Happy Birthday to this guy. My sweet son. I used to dress him up and take pictures of him when he was a baby -like the first picture. He had wrangler jeans and shoes on. He is kind, one of the most empathetic people I know, has amazing taste in music is and super smart about things I don’t understand.

This stretch in yoga is called ardha Hanumanasana, a fact I remembered without hesitation when I wrote this. Sometimes people ask how I remember Sanskrit names of poses and partly the precision of that was part of my early training in yoga and part of it is the stories that came with it. The story of Hanuman is one of my favorites. Stories are so potent to us humans, it is how we make sense of the world. I read about this idea of reaching in Todd Hargrove’s book Playing with Movement . He says The body coordinates itself best when attention is directed to some external goal in the environment. I like teaching task based movements sometimes rather than trying to ‘activate’ muscles or spend all the time doing specific mobility drills. Nothing wrong with either approach but it’s fun to imagine reaching under the bed to get an earring you dropped or reaching into the back seat of the car to grab your purse or reaching your foot out in front of you to step on a stone to cross the creek. I am always team #cardib and this is so good. When we walk around holding in our stomachs, it is not helpful or strengthening. In my zoom class today we worked on a healthier version of core strength and I got an email request to film a short version of the exercises we did. An oldie but a goodie. Spending time on the floor can yield both flexibility and strength. I have made a space in my house that I can feel comfortable getting on the floor and moving around anytime. I have an interlocking foam mat that is about 125 cms by 235 cms (4x8’) that is really much better than a yoga mat (for me). If I’m sitting in a chair to long, I can transition easily to the floor for awhile without moving furniture. I know I’m privileged to have the space, but re...-thinking all that furniture is something many of us could do. Now we are home more, make your space movement friendly. These are some emails I got from a friend who tried my classes online. She used to be a real gym person and works very hard at everything she does. She has been diagnosed with severe osteoarthritis. I know my classes are very different than regular yoga classes and can seem pretty strange at first! ... What I do in my regular zoom classes is provide a lot of variety and I tailor the practices to the movements I see folks lose as they age. I am 57 and I get what is difficult for older people in a way I don’t think younger teachers really understand. The goal is to keep you functioning like a human should, without aches and pains.
