Happy Earth Day!! Today is an important day to reflect on the miracle that is our little blue planet. It is the tiniest crumb in a giant universe, and we are but microbes upon it. It is rare in its perfect balance of the resources and climate needed for us and the web of life that is supported on earth. Much of my art these past years has been an homage of sorts to parts of our planet, to nature. I am my most grounded, at piece and in awe simultaneously when connected to... the earth in meaningful ways. Here are a few suggestions of ways to honour and celebrate the earth today: spend fifteen minutes outside and just be present and observe avoid purchasing anything with plastics this week spend fifteen minutes sketching a small aspect of nature near you take yourself on a walk and take photos of nature as you walk. Think macro (horizon lines) and micro (twig) if you have children in your covid bubble, go outside with them and follow their lead. They will show you the way become familiar with which traditional Indigenous territories you reside on and find ways to support Indigenous land rights call or email your government representatives and demand they prioritize protection of the land and water donate to your favourite organization working to protect the earth, and/or volunteer. I forget which fabulous artist I learned from that said they use their left over paint in their brushes and palette to make a quick sketch with, but I love this tip! This beautiful, juicy large piece has received a lot of attention in my solo show "This Is No Time For A Muted Palette" @thekubestudios People have shared with me that they feel so transported to this abstract landscape, as if they are entering it by viewing it. This sweet twelve inch piece called Letting Go Now reminds me of nights camping in the alpine when the sun has just set and the stars alight in the vast darkness of the mountaintop sky. When the days are epically long around summer solstice. Perhaps you just crept into your tent, exhausted after a long hike, feeling content but then realizing you need to pee! You evaluate whether your need to pee is greater than your desire to be warm and cozy and sleeping. Your need to pee ...wins out eventually (sometimes after many hours of internal debate and procrastination) and you crawl out of your warm sleeping bag and tent with your tired body. And you are glad it did because you are greeted with this sight heavenly. Can anyone else relate to this experience? With snow forecast for next week it is sweet to remember summer...
