Volunteers needed We are getting things ready for what we expect to be another busy kitten season. We are looking for volunteers to help with transport, fundraising etc. and to create a list of additional foster homes. If interested, please email us at [email protected] and tell us about yourself and what you are interested in doing. Please provide your name, email, phone number, community you live in, and if interested in fostering please also include the pets currently in your care along with your experience in the care of cats/kittens and why you feel you would be a great foster home. We will reach out to volunteers as needed. Thank you from all of us at KCH!!

This sweet little girl is Miracle "Mira". She is not available for adoption but I wanted to share her story. She came to KCH just before Christmas, a semi-feral kitten who didn't really trust people. I fostered her in my home for several weeks with the intention of putting her up for adoption once she learned to trust. I was contacted by the Atlantic Vet College as the junior surgery program were looking for a few female cats to spay in this program. 1255 (her ID number i...Continue reading

It is hard to believe that people still view this type of thing as an option. It should NEVER be an option! If you have unwanted kittens, or any animals for that matter, there are many organizations and individuals that will help.

Keeping Cats Homed 07.03.2021

We have recently posted some kittens available for adoption. Once these kittens are adopted, there are only about 3 or 4 kittens left in our program. Kitten season is winding down so we do not expect many more kittens to come to us over the winter months. If/when we do have kittens ready for adoption, they will be posted to our website as they become available. As things will be very quiet over the winter we are not adding any new foster homes at this time. We usually put... a call out for new fosters in the spring so if becoming a foster home for kittens with KCH is something that interests you, please keep an eye on our website for this interest call. This past year has been a year like no other. Families looking to add a furry family member to their home were numerous and I know many families are still waiting for the purrfect kitten. We tried to be fair when it came time to decide which families were successful and most families were understanding and patient. We would like to send a huge thank you to all of you. We will continue to be fair when it comes to selecting homes for any kittens, please continue to be patient and understanding.

Happy Sunday everyone! I just wanted to post a quick update as KCH continues to receive new applications to adopt and to foster/volunteer through our program. At this time we only have 2 kittens in our program and we do not expect many more kittens until kitten season starts again in the spring. Of course, we will continue to take in any kittens in need, however we don't expect very many until the spring. For this reason, you will not see many kittens on our website ava...ilable for adoption. Also, we are not looking to interview or add any new foster homes until the spring when we are getting ready for another busy kitten season. We are still approving new applications as all pre-approved applications remain valid for 6 months so you will be ready to adopt once kitten season starts and kittens become available for adoption. We had a very busy season with many of our volunteers and fosters very ready for a much needed break. For this reason, we may not respond to a message looking for a kitten or approve applications at the same rate that we would have before now. If you have any need for help with an injured, orphaned, or stray kitten, please reach out to us as someone will always be checking our page or phone messages for these types of messages and we will get back to you quickly. The other messages may take longer to receive a response. We also want to thank everyone that continues to support our program in any capacity. You are all amazing! For anyone who adopted a kitten from KCH in the past, don't forget about our KCH Grads Facebook page where you can post pictures and updates on your "grad". We love to see how our kittens are doing. It makes all of the hard work worth every second!

Eight new kittens have been posted to our website. Please ensure you read all of the information in each kitten's description. Pre-approved adopters can express interest by submitting an email to the adoption co-ordinator. Please know that we are getting approximately 20 interested adopters per kitten posted. We are doing our best to find the most suitable home for each kitten and being fair to those that have been waiting for a long time to find their new furry family member. Only the successful applicants will be contacted by email by Wednesday evening. Please ensure you watch your emails and respond asap. If no response by Thursday morning we will move on to the next adopter. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

As written by our amazing foster, Angela Carpenter. This is Malin's story: It started with a text- up for a challenge?. We had been fostering kittens for Keeping Cats Homed for three years, and that was the first time Lori had asked that question, but the answer was yes! Lori sent me two pictures of a tiny, dirty kitten with what looked like dried blood around her eyes. It turned out the kitten had been attacked by an animal and had three deep puncture wounds on her chest ...and abdomen, as well as many superficial cuts on her head and body, and an eye infection. Lori gave me the chance to back out, but I was already in love with this critically injured little kitten. When she arrived she was dirty, covered in flea dirt and dried blood, as well as some drainage from her puncture wounds. Her face was swollen from a cut on her forehead and her eye infection; she could barely open her eyes. She was weak and cold so I wrapped her in a blanket and held her while I worked and she slept. She wasn’t very interested in eating or drinking when she first came, but after a long sleep she perked up a bit. She actually had a good appetite and even used the litter box. We washed her face and combed some of the dirt out of her fur, and she did some bathing herself too! She was looking better already! For the first couple of weeks that she was with us, she slept in a pen in my daughter’s room at night and in her nest on my desk during the day. She was still pretty weak and slept most of the time. We carried her everywhere! She had several trips to the vet for stitches and medication, and she even had a spa day when they gave her a bath and got her all cleaned up. We were giving her medication at home too, which she was very good to take. She was so patient with us. When she started to feel better and had more energy, we found that she was very timid. Which was understandable given all she had been through. We worked hard to gain her trust and help her feel safe and confident. She became more and more brave, venturing farther from her pen every day. Even getting to the point where she was regularly climbing our Christmas tree! She had a minor setback when she developed an infection in a small cut on the side of her face. The vet shaved some of the fur off her face, so she was a little odd looking. She was also wearing an inflatable collar to stop her from scratching her face, which was almost as big as she was! She is now a sweet, confident girl who struts around the house like she owns it. She has made friends with our other foster kittens and resident cats, loves to sleep under the covers in my daughter’s bed, and is very playful. It is so amazing to think that seven weeks ago we were worried that she wouldn’t make it through the night!

We are getting daily messages asking if we have any kittens. The answer is yes, we have about 40 kittens currently in our program that will be posted for adoption in the coming weeks. If you have not been pre-approved, we recommend you apply now as once kittens are posted one of the things we look at is application date. If we have 10 pre-approved adopters interested in the same kitten, and all are suitable homes for that kitten, the deciding factor is who has been waiting... the longest. It is also getting close to Christmas and I expect we will start getting the questions about adopting for Christmas. We will not hold any kittens for longer for 48 hours as there are many people ready to add a kitten to their families now and we need to open up our foster homes for more litters in need of care. We do expect to post some kittens on Friday. Keep checking the website.

This is copied from a post by April Adams with regards to Sully's calendar and her donation to KCH. We were not able to put out our annual KCH fundraising calendar and this very generous donation will help to fill the gap in our fundraising. Thank you to April and Sully. ------- I said I would donate $1 to every calendar sold to keeping cats homed! I ordered 310 calendars and I had $30 extra in donations from followers! The donation totalling $340 was sent this morning! ... Keeping cats homed is a volunteer group that rescues kittens and young cats to ensure they're healthy and place them in foster homes to socialize and prepare them to become a member of a loving family! They are then placed into a loving home through their adoption program! The cats will be vet checked and have their first set of vaccinations! This wonderful organization is where I got my Fweet Girl Maves! Thank you for everything you guys do at keeping cats homed

New post added at Keeping Cats Homed - There has been some confusion lately with regards to how our program works. We would like to provide a quick breakdown to keep it simple and save everyone some time. 1. If interested in adopting a kitten, please submit an application through our website. This can be found at keepingcatshomed.com under the Forms tab.... 2. When completing the form, please take your time to ensure you are answering ALL of the questions with as much detail as possible. We will not reach out to applicants to clarify certain answers. If the application is incomplete, we will close the application without further contact as further contact takes up a lot of extra time for the all volunteer Application Committee. 3. We do strive to have a response to your application within 24 to 48 hours. However, sometimes this may take a bit longer especially if there are numerous applications at one time. Please be patient. If you have not received a response in 5 days, please contact us to request an update. 4. Once pre-approved there is no need to apply again. Our program differs from other shelters or rescue groups that require an application for each pet. You only need to apply once. Your pre-approval is valid for 6 months. 5. Once pre-approved, please continue to check out our website under the Adoptables tab for available kittens. If there are no kittens posted, there are no kittens currently available for adoption. It does not mean that we do not have any kittens, we almost always have kittens in foster care, but they are only posted once they have been vaccinated and cleared for adoption by our veterinarian. Please ensure you read the details under each kitten. 6. Once you see a kitten of interest, please refer to your approval email for further directions. You will then reach out by email to express interest. Please do not assume because you have asked to adopt a specific kitten, you are guaranteed that kitten will be available to you. We have multiple adopters at this time for one kitten. We accept names from preapproved applicants, and review the applications based on a number of criteria, the most important one being the length of time that the adopter has been waiting for a kitten. Once a successful adopter is selected, we will contact that adopter ONLY with further instructions. DO NOT submit a copy of the contract or the adoption fees until instructed to do so. 7. Due to COVID19, we must ensure all adoptions are completely paperless. The adoption contract must be submitted by email and the adoption fees etransferred only. We cannot accept paper and do not accept cash or cheques at this time. If you are unable to do this, please ask someone for help, or consider waiting until the restrictions have been lifted to adopt. We hope this information will help make the process run more smoothly. Any questions, please contact us at your convenience at [email protected].

COURTESY POST: SENIOR CAT MILO NEEDS QUIET LOVING HOME Milo is in need of a calm retirement home. Milo has been with me for nine years and I’m struggling to think of our home without him but I don’t think he is happy here anymore. ... He is approximately 13 and has lIved with two other cats for several years; however, he is looking to be the only cat in the home, a calm dog would be okay. He’s not interested in the other cats we have and their antics. Our female cat has become quite a bully to him and he wants to just lay around, play with jingle balls and feathers and enjoy retirement. He has started with some dental disease and likely some arthritis. For this reason his litter box would need to be on the same level on which he spends the majority of his time. He is also obese and on a weight loss diet to help with this. He takes time to warm up to people. Nine years ago when I brought him home from the shelter the vet suspected he was abused. He is wary of a hand reaching down but will head butt you for pets once he knows it’s loving. He does not like to be picked up or cuddled. He comes to you on his own and it’s very special when he does. His new owner would have to understand his personality and be ready to commit to the responsibility of a senior cat’s needs. **Serious inquiries only 902-218-7551

COURTESY POST: PAWBZ NEEDS A NEW FOREVER HOME!! Pawbz is approximately a year and a half old. She was a stray found last June and was spayed August 25. Prior to this we moved into a new home and started noticing she was not urinating in her litter box and would find urine randomly around the house. We thought getting her spayed may help. She’s fully healed from her spay now and she is still urinating in places she shouldn’t, on floor mats etc. We have had her urine tested a...nd they found her specific gravity to be high because she’s not getting enough water (we rarely see her drink from her water dish) so they recommended we get her some special wet and dry food to help calm her and help with her urinary tract. We have had her on the food for approximately a week and a half and still no improvement. We love her and she is a great cat, however we can’t put up with the cat urine any longer. We are a couple with two kids ages 5 and 7, the kids are here 50% of the time and are quite excitable with the cat. We believe she may do better in a home where it is more calm for her as the vet said anxiety may play a part for her and someone who can take the time and effort required to get her retrained and where she needs to be. Please contact [email protected] directly if you are interested in adopting this sweet girl.

KCH would like to send out a huge thank you to Verena for this fundraiser. I know this was a lot of work but many of us really enjoyed having the beautiful bouquets on a regular basis and we especially loved that the proceeds went to help us help the kitties. The bouquets raised $500 for KCH. We also wanted to thank everyone who stopped in at Global Pet Foods in Summerside to purchase a bouquet or two.

Quick update - The kittens are doing fine. We have no idea who left them and it's on a stretch of road without a lot of traffic however if anyone knows anything about these kittens please reach out to us. We truly appreciate all of your comments and the numerous offers to foster and adopt. At this time we are not looking for additional fosters but thank you for your interest. For those who have called or expressed interest in adopting these kittens, it is much to early t...o have these kittens spoken for. If you would like to be considered when they are ready to be adopted, please take a few minutes to submit an application to be preapproved. Then watch our website to see when they are posted and at that time you can put your name forward to be considered for one of these kittens. Unfortunately we are very busy right now and do not have time to return all of the messages. Hopefully this updates reaches everyone. ------ To the individual(s) who left these 6 adorable approx. 5 week old kittens in a cardboard box on the side of the Freetown Road, please know that leaving them there was not necessary. There are many rescue groups that would have accepted them and countless cat lovers who would have taken them to get them somewhere safe. Leaving any helpless animals in a cardboard box should never even be considered. We are very grateful for the kind gentleman who happened to notice one kitten peeking over the edge of the box and stopped to help them. If he would not have come along, I hate to think what could have happened to them. Please, please, PLEASE don't ever think that this is OK. Contact KCH, the PEIHS, anyone!!! PLEASE?! These kittens did not deserve this. For those that I know will ask, the kittens are all in good condition as far as we can tell right now except one kitten does have a bit of an eye infection. They have full bellies and will be joining their new foster family once we have carefully observed them for any health concerns. They will be available for adoption in approximately a month through our program if all goes well.
