The Taino called the leaf "tobaku", a word that remains in use in many parts of the world to this day (tobacco). The leaves were rolled into what they called "...cohiba" (cigar) and smoked. The Spaniards reported that when the caciques (Chiefs) got together for a sik'ar (sounds almost like cigar, right?), they would all smoke their cohibas.
