Back to drawing or making anything for the first time in a few weeks. Been feeling burnt out/pressure to always be making stuff and for it to be perfect the first time. The whole artist as content creator social media deal we all seem stuck in without having signed up for or wanting to be has made making work have so much more pressure it’s taken all the fun out of it. Trying to step back a bit and spend some more time reading, and making work without the impulse or feeling I... have to post and therefor make something good everyday due to the stupid algorithms. I made this mask for Gallery Stratford upcoming mask show/auction and thought today would be fitting to share it. 13 years ago around this time of day my life changed drastically. I was robbed at gun point at work. What’s followed is a lot of years of pain, being treated like crap by the justice system and pretty severe ptsd. And the last year has been a new type of difficult. People having their faces covered since the robbery has been a huge trigger for me and with the mask... mandates of the last year I’m reminded/triggered of this horrible day pretty much every time I have to go somewhere. It hasn’t been easy. It’s an exposure therapy I did not sign up for. The last few weeks have been increasingly difficult but oddly the last few days I’ve felt better about the whole thing in a way. As much as I would like to go back and change those little decisions that I made it so this could happen to me, and what I did afterward(really should have probably not went off to school that year), I have started to come to peace with it a bit more. That yes it’s been hard, it’s been painful and at times debilitating but the things that could have been different might not have been anymore for the better. See more
