Kelowna & District Safety Council 14.01.2022

In response to a disturbing trend toward increased motorcycle injury and fatality rates in BC, the Kelowna and District Safety Council (KDSC) is initiating rider safety workshops focused on experienced riders, to enhance knowledge, skills and strategies that can significantly improve their safety in the changing, more dense, and more dangerous traffic conditions in the region. ‘Enhanced Safety Course for Experienced Riders’ is a 1-day hands-on workshop which provides experie...nced riders fresh perspectives and critical new safety skills, based on current motorcycle safety research. Advances in contemporary, proven safety equipment are presented. Enhanced riding safety skills are discussed, demonstrated, and then practiced during closed-course and on-street coached sessions. ‘Enhanced Skills Course for Experienced Riders’ is a 2-day hands-on workshop focusing on increasing motorcycle handling skills, including: advanced clutch control, shifting, counterbalancing, higher speed braking, critical curve management strategies, steep hill control, safe and effective passing standards, and efficient highway riding. This is a package designed to advance riders' knowledge, skill, and confidence to ride the very challenging terrain and conditions of Western Canada, a technical rider's paradise. The two courses are designed to complement each other but can be taken individually and still be highly beneficial. Riders use their own bikes for both courses. Caregiving is one of the greatest acts of love a family member can give to an older loved one, and can also be deeply rewarding for the person providing the care. Helping seniors to continue living at home is not only essential to their quality of life, it is a significant factor in offsetting the high costs of in-facility healthcare. Even so, family caregivers can encounter challenges to their own health, well-being and even financial security. In response to this need, the Kelowna and District Safety Council, with sponsorship from Cooper Medical Supplies, is offering a new course called Elder@Home designed to help support caregivers with information, insights, practical solutions and a roadmap to other senior-care resources.
