Sometimes people are nervous about needles when they come for Acupuncture. For most people, (even if they come in feeling stressed, anxious or nervous) are surprised when they fall asleep and feel a deep sense of relaxation and wellbeing during and after the treatment. Sometimes people will ask "is there medicine in the needles?" But the amazing thing about Acupuncture is "the medicine" is what is already in your body - acupuncture works by stimulating THAT.

I've been in a traditional medicine making course all weekend, learning the traditional way to make things like honey pills (herbal formulas in a pill format, made by hand), powders, pastes and syrups - for a variety of health concerns (many are to aid in different types of depletion/burnout or deficiency). One easy medicine we learned is Gou Qi gao (goji berry paste); nourishing to blood, helpfull for dry eyes and anxiety and fortifies immunity. I had a big jar of Go Ji (...Gou Qi Zi) berries I grew in my garden this past summer, and I am almost done making my first Gao (paste)! This is something you can store in a jar (once strained it naturally has a jam like consistency) and take a spoon full of it daily to support your health. I may add some Ju Hua (chrysanthemum flower) to concentrate the effect on benefitting eye health. I'm hoping to come up with a few traditionally made syrups and pills to eventually offer to patients that may need them.

So true! Whether it's using injection therapies, acupuncture or chinese herbal medicine - this is always at the forefront of my goals for the patients I see. Some people need more health support even when they're coming in for injuries and pain. ... That's typically when I will suggest chinese herbal medicines. They're not an immediate fix, but they work at addressing the root causes of a person's health concern so that they aren't just masking it. Therapuetic Botox is a great example - sometimes it's essential to stop the spasm in the muscle (and that's what Botox does). But it does not address the health of the tissue itself so that the patient doesn't become reliant on that alone. Sometimes injection therapies need to be part of the picture. And sometimes there be be a chronic inflammatory response that we can address via herbal medicine. Each patient is different, but overall it's best to be sure we are treating both the branch (symptoms) and the root (causes).

Thoughts, feelings and experiences; they aren't just something happening in your brain. Expression or a lack or expression can affect your body as well as your brain, and over or under expression can be part of what ails you. Emotions in chinese medicine are seen as part of the normal functioning of the organ networks themselves, with specific types of expression associated with specific organ networks. This correlates with the nature of each organ networks function, dire...ction and role in the body and the shape or direction of that type of emotional expression. One of the ways organ networks are often classified is by yin/yang pairs - a solid organ (yin) is paired with a bowel/hollow organ (yang) Heart/small intestine: Joy/lack of joy, mania Spleen and pancreas/stomach: worry, obsession, empathy Lungs/large intestines: grief, loss, inspiration Kidney/urinary bladder: fear, willpower Liver/gallbladder: anger, resentment, judgement In Chinese medicine we treat the emotions along with physical symptoms as the mind and body are seen as one functional whole vs. two distinct aspects of your being. #chinesemedicine #kelownanow #acupuncturekelowna #chinesemedicinekelowna #emotionalhealth

This is the perfect formula for someone who is in a bad sleep cycle. Treamsent with chinese herbal medicine is usually a process. It's not something that will take effect immediately like a sleeping pill. BUT! it also doesn't produce the side effects most quick acting medicines also produce and you will find if you stick to it, so many other aspects of your health also improve and the results are lasting. There are many different formulas that treat similar symptoms, the k...ey is finding the right one for your constitution and pattern. This is why chinese medicine practitioners go to school for so long, it's not a simple craft. But it is very unique in its approach, and these methods have been developed and used for literally thousands of years. Patience is key. #kelownaherbalist #herbalmedicine #suanzaorentang
