A well socialized dog is a dog who knows how to leave other dogs alone.

During these difficult times while trying to adjust to social distancing, our dogs provide us with a lot of comfort and love. They can also be a source of extra stress, particularly when behaviour problems arise. Due to the COVID-19 crisis and social restrictions that have been put in place, all obedience classes and private face to face lessons have been postponed. As soon as it is safe for us all to meet and work together, the classes and private lessons will be back on t...he calendar. In the meantime, virtual consultations are available. Train your dog from wherever you are through FaceTime, Skype, WhatsApp, or Messenger. Assistance from a distance with your pup or dog is just a click away.

Separation anxiety. It’s all about you. It’s all because of you.

On my walk this morning, I came across an innocent looking 6 month old Golden Retriever in a muzzle, while his owner hovered over him, arms flapping around like an airport tarmac worker. One might wonder why such a young dog from an affable breed would be muzzled. Let me venture a guess. He's gone to the dog park where he's been bullied, he's been rushed by "he just wants to say hi" dogs on the street, and he's been forced into uncomfortable on leash greetings. He's never bee...n offered the safety and protection of an owner who provides strong leadership, keeping him from these socially inappropriate encounters. Just say no. Say no to yourself when you think your dog needs to go to the dog park to "socialize", say no to others when they try to force dog greetings on the street, and just say no when you get the urge to start with those crazy flapping hand signals. Be calm, be a leader, protect your dog. Be socially appropriate; no rushing, no staring, no stopping. Give your dog the skills to walk down the street with confidence. That muzzle isn't going to help that young Golden. A change in behaviour from his owner will. See more

One of the most controversial things I teach in my Puppy Kindergarten classes is the Puppy Restraint. Many a kind hearted puppy pet parent is shocked and scared when baby puppy resists and throws a temper tantrum. This article brilliantly and succinctly explains why Puppy Restraints are so important in the development of a well balanced young dog.
