We've recently been receiving a number of messages about legally living in a tiny house in Edmonton. Here are the details, as best as we understand them to be.... There are currently no tiny house communities in Edmonton. Currently, tiny houses are not legally recognized from a building code perspective. So the city cannot approve them because technically, legally, they do not exist. To legally place a tiny house in Edmonton....If you know someone with property you can go through the process of building a tiny house (must be certified as a modular home). There are permits required to add one of these to a property and you would be required to run city water and electrical to home. This is a permanent/semi-permanent solution which require much up front cost to the property owner. To legally place a tiny home in Edmonton....RV parks. Depending on the park, you may need to have you home certified as RVIA, which is RV building code. Other parks may allow you to park without this certification. It would come down to the requirements of the park, call around. Legal foundation based tiny homes in Edmonton AKA garden suites. You can build one yourself if you own an eligible property in the city or you can find one for rent on places like Kijiji or FB Marketplace. To place a THOW (tiny house on wheels) onto someone's property would not be considered to be legal. Although some choose this option, there are risks (fines and evictions) associated with it. If those are understood, the choice is yours. Outside of Edmonton...****completely hearsay*** we know of one person who has had success with Sturgeon County and was able to park legally as a farm hand residence. In Leduc county they required engineer sign off on the design. At the end of day, living tiny isn't easy. You have to get creative and work closely with the property owner/city/county of where you would like to park. In our opinion though, it's worth the work you put into living tiny.
