Did you know we are members of the Beemaid co-op? While we distribute a small portion of our honey crop ourselves, majority of our honey is sent in drums to Beemaid to be sold at a number of different retailers. This means that when you purchase Beemaid honey from your local Costco, No Frills, or Real Canadian Superstore, a small portion of our honey crop might just be in there! ... We have also just learned that Beemaid is an occasional honey supplier for Hello Fresh and Tim Hortons! We love the idea of our honey being incorporated into so many people’s lives in a number of ways

The role of the queen bee in the hive There are approximately 50 000 - 60 000 workers in a colony and usually only 1 queen. The queen bee controls everything that happens in the hive through the production of pheromones which are chemicals that control and determine the worker bees behaviour and biology. This also helps to implement unity among the hive. ... The queen is in charge of laying all the eggs in a hive and she lays anywhere from 175 000 - 200 000 eggs each year. Each time she lays an egg she decides whether she will lay it in a worker or drone cell. The decision is important as it determines the future of the hive. If the queen does a poor job of laying the eggs or if a ‘better’ queen emerges the workers may decide to kill the queen using a method called ‘balling’. This method involves the worker bees clustering around the queen and raising her internal temperature to a point so high she ultimately dies. Despite the queen playing the most important role in the hive, the overall survival of the hive is even more crucial.

What happens to bees in the winter? Some beekeepers may decide to transport their hives to warmer regions, however we prefer to keep our bees right at home Every year we have a lengthy ‘wrap-up’ process that consists of;... Inspecting the hives for parasites or diseases Ensuring each hive has a healthy and productive queen Providing the hives with enough food reserves for the winter Wrapping the hives in felt side wraps, with a pillow or insulated top bag, and finally tying a piece of plywood on top to the pallet on the bottom to hold everything in place. Although our bees may not be preoccupied with making honey, they manage to keep busy by consuming their food stores of accumulated honey and syrup in the hive. In attempts to stay warm, the bees will cluster together to conserve energy and even manage to maintain an average hive temperature 27 C. There are many different methods of ‘winterizing’ bees and it is up to the beekeeper to determine a process that works best for them and their bees

Look at that brood Things are slowing down around here. By this time of the year, our bees are all tucked in for the winter, while we prepare our equipment and get ready for next year! We’ve still got lots of honey and all of our great body products available for purchase!

Ever wonder what the inside of a white beehive box looks like? Our hives are almost all wrapped up for the winter! We wrap them in side wraps (black roll in the back of the photo), cover them in an insulated bag or box and secure it all with string and plywood, keeping the bees toasty warm all winter!
