Let’s expand upon useful conversations to have as a couple before the arrival of your newborn. How do we intend to approach sleep and night time wakings/feedings? There is much that we can’t predict with the arrival of a baby, but one thing is for sure, we will not be sleeping like we used to for a while! You may wish to set aside time before the baby comes to discuss how you will approach sleep and wakings. Of course, plans don’t always pan out the way you expect, but when y...ou have a sense of one another’s strengths and needs in the sleep/night department it can help you join together to navigate the challenges that crop up along the way. The way couples manage this piece is heavily influenced by the communication patterns and attunement created ahead of time. The energy you put in now will go a long way to supporting as much sleep and rest as possible for everyone when your new family member arrives! ~Shannon

Let’s expand upon useful conversations to have as a couple before the arrival of your newborn. What are our boundaries? Everyone feels differently about the level of involvement they would like from family members and friends. This feeling may also shift over the course of different phases of the postpartum journey and beyond. For example, you may imagine being surrounded by visits from loved ones in the early days of your baby’s life or you may intend to take time to get to ...know your baby and adjust to your growing family before welcoming visitors. You may also have specific ideas about the role you wish for loved ones to take in your baby’s life. Being able to attune to your no’s and yes’s within yourself, and as a couple, is just as important for self-care as taking a shower! ~Shannon

Let’s expand upon useful conversations to have as a couple before the arrival of your newborn. How will I know if I am struggling with my mental health? We can expect to need to pay extra attention to our mental health during the postpartum period. While it is normal to experience some form of baby blues, many new moms and their support people wonder about how to tell when it goes beyond this. It can be helpful to discuss as a couple ahead of time what might be the signs th...at extra intervention is needed. You know your own baseline best; some of these signs might include: - You experience persistent feelings of: guilt, shame, hopelessness - You experience intrusive thoughts that are scary in nature - You have difficulty caring for yourself (beyond the challenges that come with caring for a newborn) - Your predominant mood is: sad, angry, frustrated, anxious, or depressed - You have lost interest in things you used to enjoy When we are in the newborn fog it can be hard to discern our thoughts and feelings. Creating an open and safe dialogue ahead of time can make it more possible for mothers to express what they are noticing, as well as for partners and other support people to reflect to the mom when they are noticing these signs. If you are struggling individually or as a couple during the postpartum period, please reach out. ~Shannon

Anger is one of those emotions that so often has others behind it. Sometimes when we are met with anger from another person, it might feel disproportionate to the situation as it appears on the surface. This is a clue! There is something behind the anger. In therapy sessions I invite partners to try to discover what lies beneath the other’s anger. When we can uncover and attend to those secondary emotions often we will notice anger dissolves, almost like a magic wand has been waved. ~Shannon Thank you to @wholeheartedschoolcounseling for the share!

Okay let’s return to positive affirmations for a minute. Remember, the brain is like a muscle that can be trained. Think about when you try a new physical exercise, it might feel awkward at first and take some time to figure out the mechanics. But, with repetition and consistency, you build muscle (amongst many other positive benefits)! This will happen in the brain when you repeat daily affirmations. New neural pathways will be created allowing easier access to positive thoughts and feelings about self. It may feel strange at first, you might not even fully believe what you are saying, that’s okay. Pick an affirmation you want to believe and strengthen that muscle! ~Shannon Thank you @abbiepaulhus for the great share!

In my line of work I sometimes hear questions like "why did they stay?", or comments like "I would never have let myself get into that kind of a situation." These are unhelpful and harmful statements, and only contribute to the silence that survivors feel they must keep. Here are just a few reasons someone might experience abuse. -Meagan
