The Liberal government has done very little for those who most need it, said NDP Community Services spokesperson Kendra Coombes. People who receive income assistance or disability support were highly impacted by a reduction in services and other issues related to the pandemic yet many were prevented from accessing federal response benefits and were only ever given a $50 increase in support from the province at the beginning of the lockdown in the spring. https://www.nsndp.ca/pandemic-poverty-impacts-mental-health

Rising numbers of COVID-19 cases and new public health restrictions are highlighting again the need for paid sick days for everyone. It is completely unfair fo...r the Liberals to tell people they need to stay home when they are sick, while the Liberal party refuses to provide paid sick days for every single worker in this province, said NDP Leader Gary Burrill. No one wants to go to work when they are not feeling well, but too many people in our province are put in the difficult position of having to choose between losing pay or following public health advice. Friday November 20th, 2020: Effective Immediately - Maple Hill Manor is suspending our community outings for our residents with their loved ones. We are also a...sking any family or friends that are from the Halifax Regional Municipality or has travelled to the HRM to please avoid visiting our residents until further notice. We understand that this may be upsetting to some people but our main priority at this point is maintaining the safety and wellness of our residents and loved ones. We can still schedule FaceTime and Skype visits and try to accommodate people with access to their loved ones. If anything else changes in regards to the way that we facilitate our visits at this time we will let everyone know. If anyone has any questions you can contact Kendra Baldwin, Administrator at (902)862-6495 ext. 225 or Wil van Hal, Director of Recreation at (902)862-6495 ext. 233. Thank you for your cooperation and doing your part to keep our residents, staff and community safe! See more

***DRUG ALERT*** Public Health received a report from a community partner that a substance being sold as methadone pills in the Glace Bay and New Waterford area...s of Cape Breton was contaminated with fentanyl. The substance tested positive using a fentanyl test strip and there have been reported overdoses associated with the substance. With the possibility of substance contamination, it’s important to reduce the risk of overdose: -- Don’t use alone, if possible. Keep a distance of 2 metres and respect public health measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19 if using substances with others. If you have to use alone, call or text a trusted support person and let them know you are using alone and provide them with your location. -- Start with a test dose. Start low, go slow. -- Have naloxone available, even if you aren’t intentionally using opioids. Naloxone is available for free from most community pharmacies and other community locations, including needle distribution and disposal organizations. For more information about where to get a free naloxone kit and how to use it, visit http://www.nsnaloxone.com/ -- Call 911 in the event of an overdose. Know your rights under the Good Samaritan Act http://www.nsnaloxone.com/good-samaritan-act.html Please share this information friends and family, including youth.

This email showed up in my inbox just before noon. I find the email to be extremely troubling. Our Legislative Assembly has not met since March 2020 and will not reconvene until February 2021 at the earliest. It has been 9 months since our Nova Scotia Government was held accountable for decisions made. It has been 9 months since our elected officials passed legislation that would better the lives of Nova Scotians. It is past time this democratic function was put to use. Th...e Nova Scotia Legislative Assembly should meet to perform the duties Nova Scotians expect their elected members to perform. I am disappointed the Premier and the Liberal Government have made this decision. Best, Kendra

ICYMI: There are still workers waiting to receive up to $2,000 through the Essential Health Care Workers Program, including 450 staff at Northwood. Tuesday at the Standing Committee on Human Resources, I tabled a motion calling on the Health Minister to disclose which employers and positions have received the wage top-up, and give a timeline for payment of outstanding funds. HALIFAX -- NDP Aboriginal Affairs and Truth and Reconciliation Commission spokesperson Susan Leblanc for Dartmouth North made the following statement on Treaty Day: Today, on Treaty Day and at the start of Mi’kmaq History Month, we must recommit to honouring the treaties that define our relationships with Indigenous peoples of this land. In the two decades since the Marshall decision, which affirmed the Mi’kmaq’s treaty right to hunt, fish and gather for a moderate livelihoo...d, the federal government has failed to work with Indigenous communities to implement a moderate livelihood fishery. The NSNDP supports the Mi’kmaq’s right to a moderate livelihood fishery and we condemn all acts of anti-Indigenous racism. The federal government, and all those involved, must ensure the safety of Mi’kmaw fishers exercising their rights. https://www.nsndp.ca/treaties-mikmaq-must-be-honoured

Message from the Administrator Re: Designated Caregiver & Community Visits As of tomorrow Thursday October 1, 2020, Maple Hill Manor is announcing we are ready ...to implement the Designated Caregiver role for all our residents. If able, our residents will designate 2 loved ones that will be given the title Designated Caregiver, however only 1 visitor is allowed at a time. If the resident is unable to make this decision it is up to the Substitute Decision Maker to call Wil van Hal, Recreation Director at 9028626495 ext 233 and give the names of these 2 individuals. Only those people designated by the SDM will be given the Designated Caregiver access. As a designated caregiver you may request one of the following times to visit: 11am to 1:00pm or 4:00pm to 6:00pm to assist with mealtime You will continue to book these times with Recreation Director by phoning 9028626495 ext 233. Only those Caregivers that schedule their visits will be screened at the front main entrance. If your visit is not booked, you will not be allowed in the Manor. Once screened at the door you must go directly to your loved one’s room and must remain there for duration of visit. If visiting in a semi-private room the curtain must be pulled over to divide the room. Designated Caregivers are only allowed to visit their own loved ones. Socializing with other residents is not allowed at this time. A mask will be provided upon entrance to the building and must remain on at all times. Indoor visits for residents outside of these 2 designated individuals must be done on a scheduled basis Sunday to Saturday 10am to 4:00pm, again only 1 person is allowed to visit at a time, same protocol as before, visitors enter through side courtyard door during scheduled appointment time. Visitors and residents must remain masked at all times and remain 6 feet apart. Outdoor visits may be accommodated at special request depending on staffing limitations. We are also very happy to announce our residents are able to leave the Manor to visit with family in their homes. These visits must be prearranged and scheduled with the facility. Physical distancing guidelines and gathering limits must be adhered to by all families. At this time residents are not allowed to visit restaurants or other public places, however a drive in a vehicle with a loved one would be permitted. QUICK FACTS for DESIGNATED CAREGIVER 1. Visitor information must be logged, including date and time of attendance. 2. Visitors are not permitted to enter the facility if they are under a requirement to self-isolate due to travel, awaiting for results of COVID-19 testing, due to contact with a COVID-19 case or are currently ill with COVID-19 symptoms. 3. The NSEF has invited the three major political party leaders in the province to come and discuss Equalization with our some of our group. We asked Karen Case...y a while ago and she flat out said no to a meeting. Tim Houston is ignoring us 100%. Many requests sent to Tim but no reply at all. We heard from Gary Burrill right away and he agreed to sit with us, on camera, and discuss the situation Cape Breton is facing. We appreciate that Gary also brought Kendra Coombes and John Morgan (former Mayor) to the table for a great discussion. We must wonder why the other leaders will not have dialogue with us on the issue of Equalization Fairness. We have seen a letter from Mike Kelloway to the Province asking for a meeting with the Premier, but we have not heard anything yet about a confirmation of that meeting. The NSEF will continue to discuss, as much as possible, with all leaders and parties in Nova Scotia, about the yearly equalization payment (over $2 billion now) and the fact that Cape Breton and rural Nova Scotia generates this transfer and yet we see very little from it. This is an issue that we can not afford to walk away from anytime soon. We want to the Liberals and Progressive Conservatives to come to the table to discuss the issue of Equalization Fairness. It is important to hear what the other 2 parties have to say.
