Everything in this article sounds very familiar. I can relate to the challenges the leaders and communities are dealing with. It goes back to the legitimacy question of our leaders to represent us on issues that fall outside our reserve boundaries. Whose legitimacy are we recognizing? The case law says the Indian Act elected Chief and Councils are the legitimate authority to represent us on issues impacting our rights in our traditional territories. As community members ...have we elected them to act in that capacity or have we elected them to run operations on reserve? Who has actually legitimize our chief and councils to represent us on issues related to our rights and traditional territory - was it US or the government and courts?
