Does anyone else find olive oil to have a strong and overwhelming flavour? Because of this, we had moved away from using it in certain situations (baking, for example). Then we found an "ultra light tasting" version ... game changer! Bertolli makes a nice one :) ~ Charlene ~
I wanted to share my favourite mustard with you guys! Babci Polish Horseradish Mustard It sounds super strong tasting, doesn't it? It is not. ... Really nice on sandwiches and just adds enough of a zip without being overpowering. All 3 of my kids like it too! Not to mention my husband, who introduced us all to this. He's the official mustard purchaser for the household ~ Charlene ~ #ottawadietitian #ottawanutrition #familymealtime #babcimustard #favoritemustard

A number of years ago, I started making my own taco seasoning and I've never turned back! It's so easy and much tastier than the store bought versions (I'm biased, I know!). . Tacos are a big hit here and I find the meat really easy to repurpose into another meal. The plan this week is tacos one night, taco salad for lunch the next day and burrito bowls later in the week. . Cooked and seasoned taco meat also freezes really well. Why not double your batch next time? ... . We tend to use beef, mostly because our family owns a beef farm, so it's easy to access for us. Ground chicken, pork or turkey also works! . Here's my seasoning recipe (mild - medium spice) which I almost always double, if not triple: . 1 lb ground beef 1 cup tomato sauce 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tbsp chili powder 3 cloves garlic, minced 125 - 250 mL water . Brown the meat. Meanwhile, mix remaining ingredients together, except water. Add to browned meat. Add water. Simmer uncovered until meat reaches desired consistency. . Enjoy! . ~ Charlene ~ #ottawanutritionist #ottawadietitian #ottawafoodie #tacos #fromscratch #freezermealprep See more

It's a big day! First day back at the office since MARCH ... Navigating COVID has been a challenge, to say the least. We've been doing most of our appointments via Zoom or by phone, with some home visits thrown in the mix. So much has changed. ... Will we get back to using this space as we used to? Time will tell. But it feels good to be back. . . . . #ottawadietitian #ottawanutritionist #pediatricdietitian #rehabdietitian #kennedynutrition #virtualdietitian
With summer on it's way (finally!), I'm finding more and more people reaching for sparkling water these days. You can find a variety of options at your local supermarket, but many also have a splash of natural flavour added to them, such as lemon or grapefruit. Are they a good choice for you and your kids?... In terms of hydration, they're just as good as regular water. However, the carbonation in sparkling water, in addition the the use of citric acid as natural flavour, lead to a lower pH (ie. more acidic) fluid. Flat water has a pH around 7 and sparkling water, between 2.7 - 3.3. Research has shown that drinking acidic fluids can be potentially damaging to teeth. Yikes! Flat water is your best bet, but if you are going with sparkling, sipping it with a meal is a strategy for balancing out some of that acidity. Check out the article by Real Mom Nutrition for more details on sparkling water and kids! https://www.realmomnutrition.com/is-sparkling-water-good-f/ ~ Charlene ~ #ottawadietitian #ottawanutrition #kidsnutrition #sparklingwater #dentalhealth
Any Instant Pot pros out there? Admittedly, I am not one them. I've really struggled to find recipes I enjoy for the IP, but this is one of them! Super tender and tasty beef that the entire family enjoyed.... The recipe does call for releasing pressure and adding carrots near the end. I did not do that, but instead added the extra time to the total cooking time and steamed the carrots on the stove instead. Enjoy! ~ Charlene ~ https://damndelicious.net//04/12/instant-pot-pot-ro/print/

Great idea from Real Mom Nutrition! Any meal prep ideas on your list for this week?
These are sooooooo good! With nectarines being in season at the moment, how about treating yourself to a new breakfast or dessert, as these can be served either way. . We've been making these off and on for years and the only addition to the recipe that I would suggest is to drizzle a bit of maple syrup on top. The nectarines don't need to be ripe, and it a way it's almost better if they aren't for that perfect balance of sweet and tart. . Enjoy! *Recipe link in comments*... #ottawadietitian #ottawadietitian #ottawafoodie #familymeals #brunchathome
