Restoration tips. When replacing inner fenders on Mopars, you don't need a spotweld cutter, and you don't need to drill a single hole in the new panel. Here's a quick run down on how to do it: This is a structural part of a unibody car, so this should only be done with a body that is supported properly, so nothing sags or moves. Begin by removing the undercoat from the spotwelded areas on the wheel side. Find all the spotwelds, and drill them right through with a regular dril...l bit. Sandblast or wire wheel all the flanges clean. Apply a weld through primer, but avoid the holes. Even though it's called weld through primer, it will make you frustrated trying to weld through it! Fit the new AMD inner fender that you bought from KEN's Vintage reHAB . Mark the new panel through the drill holes with a paint pen, and carefully remove a little spot of the black coating at every dot. This way you won't have anything contaminating your plug welds. Clamp the new panel in place completely, and once it's positioned correctly, do your plug welds from the wheel side. This has several benefits. 1. No holes drilled in the new panel means no grinding on the visible side. 2. Welding through the thick frame rail and shock tower into the new panel results in stronger welds, since you are't trying to penetrate into thick metal below. 3. The welds are all on the wheel side, which is easier to access to weld, grind, and will get undercoated as original. 4. The welds will look just like factory spot welds. Do one side at a time, so you always have a baseline. Measure before, during and after, for length, width and diagonal. This is the basic procedure. Of course you need the skills, knowledge and welding abilities to do this kind of work. If you don't, have someone who does, do the work for you.
too cool to not share
