Over the past 4 years we have planted rows of willow trees above buffer zones in our growers field alongside waterways. The willow trees absorb nutrients from t...he soil preventing them from entering streams/ rivers and reduce GHG emissions New data from our Greenhouse Gas Project shows that 29 tonnes of CO2 was sequestered from 1 hectare of Willow Trees. This is equivalent to the annual emissions of 6 cars #willows #farmersprotectingtheenvironment #PEI #agresearch #GHGmitigationpractice Kensington North Watersheds Association Souris & Area Branch of the P.E.I. The PEI AgriWatershed Partnership, formed in 2019, is a collaboration between the PEI Federation of Agriculture and the PEI Watershed Alliance. A conversation b...etween William Visser, a potato producer in Orwell Cove, and Barry Murray of Kensington North Watersheds Association - regarding farmers, fish kills, and court cases - played a large role in the formation of today’s AgriWatershed Partnership. From this conversation, the idea was born to create a pilot project in collaboration with watersheds to identify priority fields and draw on the experience of soil and water engineers to develop desired improvements that will reduce potential environmental impacts. Thank you, William and Barry! Our watershed was fortunate to host one of the partnership projects last year in Uigg. We worked with Stephen Visser, another local farmer, to address a runoff issue and improve the health of the surrounding soil and water. Collaboration is the key to maintaining healthy, happy watersheds and farmland, and the rewards from partnerships like this are felt by all - especially the many creatures living in these habitats!

With summer just around the corner we will soon be gardening and doing yardwork. Improper disposal of invasive plant species can cause them to spread farther fa...ster. For many invasive plant species on PEI, you can remove them at the root, secure them in a clear plastic bag, label them as invasive plant and place them in or beside your waste bin for pick-up to be incinerated at PEI Energy Systems.

We have various methods we use to measure water quality in our watersheds, but how do they all compare to each other? This winter we are partnering with the PEI department of Environment, Energy, and Climate Action to test our different methods! This involves measuring water quality with our handheld YSI probe, analyzing grab samples ourselves with our YSI photometer, and sending samples to the PEI Analytical Lab for comparison.... Once all the data is collected and analyzed we hope to determine the validity of our probe and photometer readings! #ecoaction

We would like to remind snowmobile operators that it is unlawful to operate a vehicle in a watercourse. In fact, you could incur a fine of $3000. #ecoaction

Have you seen these fish on PEI?! You should never dump aquarium fish, aquarium water, or aquarium plants -dead or alive- into waterways.
