Virginia is a resident at The Gardens. She considers herself a warrior for surviving this pandemic and we agree: Personally, I find that my energy level and passion have dissipated drastically. I love to write; it has been my passion all my life. Now, I can’t think of who or what to write about. When I lay down, I can feel my energy ebb and flow away from me. It is hard to feel that I have any reason left to live. I must cling to hope. #LongTermCare

Mary is retired, but caregiving has become her full-time job: My friends always ask me: ‘how do you do it?’ The truth is I’m not always upbeat and happy. I have moments of sadness and worry. I sometimes feel that someone should be caring for me. Mary is not alone. Read how she and others from our community have coped with year.

We have asked a lot from our families and caregivers during this pandemic. We have asked them to be flexible as rules change in long-term care; we have asked them to designate specific visitors; and we have asked them to get tested weekly for COVID-19. But we also want to ask one more thing are you doing ok? Right now, being a caregiver of someone living in long-term care is stressful, but know that you not alone. At Kensington, we have a support group for our families and ...caregivers struggling during this pandemic. And, there are other free resources to help caregivers throughout the province. Check them out below . #NationalCaregiverDay

Joan Hollobon told Canada about the birth of universal health care. She wrote about the AIDS epidemic. And, today, at 101 years old, she was invested into the Order of Canada. For 25 years, Joan was the medical reporter for The Globe and Mail. Through her hands-on approach, she redefined the field of health care journalism, changing how patients and physicians interacted. She also fought for more women to be journalist, in a field dominated by men. Congratulations, Joan! W...e are proud you are part of our #LongTermCare community at The Gardens. Meet Diane! She is our behavioural support social worker in our long-term care home, and she helps make life better for residents. Some of the residents in long-term care, like those with advanced dementia symptoms, do not speak verbally, but rather through their actions. Diane notices when someone’s actions say something is wrong, and works with our teams to fix those issues. Music is an important health care tool. It brings joy, fosters connections, helps those with memory loss remember their past, and aids in processing challenging emotions like grief. Our music therapists lead this work people like Sarah, who works with our long-term care community. This year, Sarah has focused on using music to fight isolation: With the COVID-19 restrictions, it meant getting creative and innovative on how I connect with our residents while meeting them whe...re they are with their emotional, social, physical and psychosocial needs. It could mean having a socially distanced balcony visit with two residents, a virtual music therapy session or an in-person 1:1 session with a resident in their room. Thank you to our music therapists for helping our community stay on tempo. Happy Music Therapy Month!
