As per provincial regulations masked are required to enter the building and entry will be restricted to anyone who has been outside or in contact with individuals outside the Atlantic Bubble. To speed up ser...vices we ask owners to call in advance for food or prescription refills so that they may be prepared in advance so your order can be ready on arrival. We can even do curbside delivery to your vehicle for your pick-ups. We want to thank everyone for your patience during this difficult time. Nutritional DCM. Could your dog’s food be hurting his heart? Recently the FDA has been investigating a link between certain dog foods and a heart condition called Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM). What is DCM?... DCM is a heart condition where the muscular walls of the heart become thin and stretched out. The heart becomes very large and weak and is unable to contract fully. When the heart cannot contract fully, it is unable to pump enough blood to the body. This disease often becomes deadly. What foods have been implicated? The foods that have been linked to this disease are often labeled as grain free. They are foods that contain legumes such as peas, lentils, chickpeas, and beans. See the image below for the 10 most commonly implicated diets. (Keep in mind these are not the only ones that are risky, they are just the 10 most common ones.) What are symptoms of DCM? In the earliest stages your dog likely won’t show any symptoms. As the disease progresses you may notice lethargy, becoming tired with exercise, excess panting, coughing, and fainting. What should you do if your dog has been eating a grain free diet or is showing any of the above symptoms? If your dog is showing symptoms please schedule an appointment with your veterinarian. Chest X-rays may be taken and it may be recommended that your dog be evaluated by a veterinary cardiologist. If your dog has been eating a grain free diet for months to years we strongly suggest speaking with your veterinary team about a diet change. Nutritional DCM can affect any breed and any age of dog. We encourage you to reach out to discuss any questions or concerns you may have.
