I am absolutely grateful for the skills I have gained working as a volunteer with the Shaw Spotlight #Nanaimo team. I am sending out much love and thanks to the brilliant television talents on the SHAW team: Todd Jones; Jocelyn Matwe; Stas Bobkov; and Cameron McLean for their continuous dedication and excellent work and inspirational support to our community and Shaw Spotlight volunteers.

I completed this film with thanks to help from the Shaw Spotlight #Nanaimo team just days before #Canada was shut down due to COVID-19. This was a relief it completed in time. Released March 17th, 2020, this mini-documentary is a portrait documentary of multi-talent Canadian jazz bassist/composer/producer Rick Kilburn. The mini-doc was the natural evolution of some years of volunteer TV directing. Pre-COVID I had been volunteer television directing for a number of years for a... Shaw Spotlight Nanaimo TV show called Coast Connections featuring host Elizabeth Heinz who was fantastic to work with. I had always wanted to try learning more about filmmaking and editing, it was on my bucketlist/vision board. The Shaw team was wonderful and I got to work closely with Todd Jones, who I admire as a director and editor and team-builder. (As a highly skilled director he can follow a hockey game puck or lacrosse or wrestling at lightning speed, really just too incredible and inspirational as a director to observe really.) Join us and watch the mini documentary with bassist Rick Kilburn as he shares stories, his music and a few laughs with highlights from the music he co-produced from Canadian pianist John Stetch, his wonderful solo bass improvisation, performing with Vancouver island pianist Ron Hadley and a spotlight on Rick’s father, #jazz guitarist Jim Kilburn. Includes photo flashbacks from time spent performing with Dave and Dan Brubeck, his days with Mose Allison and more! https://www.youtube.com/watch

Volunteering as a #TV Director for Shaw Spotlight television in #Nanaimo, #Canada in recent years, the idea came to make a mini-#documentary #short #film with the help of Director Todd Jones and the Shaw Spotlight team. It was a fun idea to interview BC multi-#JUNO Award and multi-award-winning #bassist and #jazz #producer Rick Kilburn. A master musician/producer who has been part of the Canadian music scene for over 50 years, Kilburn started performing at a young age with the rock band Chilliwack and later taking up the jazz bass he recorded/toured with artists like Dave Brubeck, Mose Allison, performing with Chet Baker and a ton of others! Enjoy the ten minute short featuring this accomplished Canadian. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koV7F42KO0U Released March 19, 2020.
