Working in Rain! When using hand tools, use tools with textured, nonslip grip handles. Wear appropriate rain gear.Rain gear which includes both a coat and pants or overalls and is ventilated should be worn for prolonged wet-weather work. If it's cold and rainy, wool or synthetic fibers specifically designed for cold weather use are the best for wear under rain gear because it will keep you warm even if it gets wet. To keep water out of shoes or boots, make sure the top of the... shoe or boot extends above the ankle and rain gear extends to the ankles. Also, the top of the boot or shoe should be inside the pant leg (as opposed to tucking the pant leg into the footwear).Use proper hand protection. wear gloves that fit snugly and provide a nonslip grip. To prevent water from entering gloves, make sure that the sleeve of the glove is either tight fitting or is long enough that it fits under the cuff of your raincoat Ensure that you can see. If wearing goggles or eyeglasses, use antifogging sprays or wipes on them before going outside. Be sure that the area you are working in is well lit. Make sure that you can be seen. If working in an area where there is vehicular traffic, always wear bright-colored, reflective vests or rain gear, even during the day. See more

Environment Canada recommends reducing or rescheduling strenuous activities outdoors if possible. People, especially the elderly and children, may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, dry/burning eyes, and headaches. People with pre-existing conditions such as COPD, heart conditions and asthma may experience symptoms that are worse than normal. Limit outdoor activities as much as possible. Reschedule activities for days with a low risk rating. Do... not exercise outdoors, try going to a gym or indoor facility to limit exposure to smokey air. Keep windows and doors closed to prevent outdoor air from coming inside as much as possible. Limit outdoor time for children and limit the activities to prevent heavy breathing when outside. Ensure to take all medications as prescribed for medical conditions, such as COPD, heart conditions and asthma, to control symptoms as much as possible. If symptoms from poor air quality persist or become increasing worse over time without improvement, seek medical attention. Reschedule outdoor work activities for another day or another time with a lower AQHI rating. Take regular scheduled breaks if you must work outdoors and limit strenuous activities, such as manual lifting, for another day of possible. See more

Abrasive blasting operations can create high levels of dust and noise. Abrasive material and the surface being blasted may contain toxic materials (e.g., lead paint, silica) that are hazardous to workers. Silica sand (crystalline) can cause silicosis, lung cancer, and breathing problems in exposed workers. Engineering controls: OSHA recommends a number of engineering controls for abrasive blasting, including the use of a less-toxic abrasive blasting material, using abrasives ...that can be delivered with water to reduce dust, installing barriers to isolate blasting areas and keeping employees away from the blaster. Using ventilation systems to remove dust also is suggested. Administrative controls: Practice good housekeeping by regularly cleaning using wet methods or HEPA-filtered vacuuming, OSHA states. In addition, the agency recommends decontaminating equipment, scheduling blasting when as few workers as possible are onsite, refraining from performing abrasive blasting in high winds, and refraining from using compressed air (which creates more dust) to clean. #sandblasting #nacerequirements #nace #coatinginspector See more

Did you know.... About Arc Flash Safety An arc flash (also called a flashover) is the light and heat produced as part of an arc fault, a type of electrical explosion or discharge that results from a connection through air to ground or another voltage phase in an electrical system. Here are six of the most effective strategies for reducing the frequency, severity and harmfulness of arc flash incidents. 1. Perform a hazard analysis. ... 2. Reduce available fault current. 3. Shorten clearing time. 4. Adopt remote operation. 5. Predict and prevent faults. 6. Redirect blast energy. Repeated exposure can cause permanent eye damage. During arc welding, eye exposure to intense visible light is prevented mostly by a welder's helmet. However, welders can sustain retinal damage if they carelessly view an arc. At no time should anyone look at an arc without eye protection. Certain types of UV radiation can produce an injury to the surface and mucous membrane (conjunctiva) of the eye called "arc eye," "welders' eye" or "arc flash." These names are common names for "conjunctivitis" - an inflammation of the mucous membrane of the front of the eye. The symptoms include: * pain - ranging from a mild feeling of pressure in the eyes to intense pain in severe instances * tearing and reddening of the eye and membranes around the eye (bloodshot) * sensation of "sand in the eye" * abnormal sensitivity to light * inability to look at light sources (photophobia) The amount of time required to cause these effects depends on several factors such as the intensity of the radiation, the distance from the welding arc, the angle at which the radiation enters the eye, and type of eye protection that the welder or bystander is using. However, exposure to just a few seconds of intense UV light can cause arc eye. These symptoms may not be felt until several hours after exposure.

Theoretically, a safety shoe is a shoe that meets at least one of the five criteria set by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). You can find out what criteria a pair of safety shoes meets by consulting CSA's alphanumerical code found inside one of the shoes. The code is made up of five numbers or letters. 1. 1, 2 or 0 2. P or 0 3. M or 0 4. E, S or C... 5. X or 0 6. The first code indicates whether the shoe comes with a steel toe cap, which is a shell that protects toes against crushing: "0" means there is none, "2" means that it resists impacts of 90 joules and "1" means that it resists impacts of 125 joules (a 22.7 kg object falling from a height of 56 cm). 7. The second code indicates whether the shoe has soles that protect arches against punctures. "P" means it does and "0" means it does not. 8. The third code indicates whether the shoe has a metatarsus protector against shocks and collisions. "M" means it does and "0" means it does not. 9. The fourth code represents the sole's electrical characteristics: "E" means it resists electrical shocks, "S" means it disperses static electricity and "C" means it conducts electricity. 10. The last code (X) can only be found on shoes that protect the foot against chain saws. See more

Did you know.... A lot of employees are confused about lockout tag out procedures 1. Identify machinery/equipment to lock out Identify the machinery or equipment that needs to be locked out.... 2. Make sure that all moving parts have come to a complete stop or safe state. Also ensure that the act of shutting off equipment does not cause a hazard for other workers. 3. Identify and de-energize all hazardous energy sources. Energy-isolating devices must be used on the main power circuit, not on a control power circuit. 4.Apply a personal lock to the energy-isolating device for each hazardous energy source, and keep the keys to the lock in your possession. These locks ensure personal lockout protection. Since no other worker has a key for that lock, the lock can’t be removed inadvertently. Do not use combination locks for lockout. 5 Test de-energization and lockout process Verify the effectiveness of the de-energization and lockout process after each energy-isolating device is locked out or after a group of nearby devices is locked out. Before testing, ensure that all other workers are clear of the hazards and that no hazard will be created if the process isn’t effective. The most common way to test the effectiveness is to attempt to start the equipment and confirm it does not start. See more

Different hazards require different types of respirators, so it’s important to choose the right respirator for the breathing hazards in your workplace. Some respirators must also be fitted with the ...correct filter/cartridge in order to be effective. What Are the Requirements for this Test? do not eat, drink, smoke or chew gum within 15 minutes of the fitting. Did you know.... Tick Safety Cover as much of your body as possible when working or playing in grassy or wooded areas. Wear a hat, a long-sleeved shirt, and long pants with the legs tucked into your socks. Keep in mind that it is easier to spot ticks on light-coloured clothes. Use insect repellents, such as products with DEET.... Clear leaves, brush, tall grasses, woodpiles, and stone fences from around your house and the edges of your yard or garden. This may help reduce ticks and the rodents that the ticks depend on. Checking for ticks When you come in from outdoors, check all over your body for ticks, including your groin, head, and underarms. Comb your hair with a fine-toothed comb, or have someone check your scalp. Ticks can come into your house on clothing, outdoor gear, and pets. These ticks can fall off and attach to you. Check your clothing and outdoor gear. Remove any ticks you find. Then put your clothing in a clothes dryer on high heat for 1 hour to kill any ticks that might remain. Check your pets for ticks after they have been outdoors. Check your children daily for ticks, especially during the summer months.
