National Child Day 2020- spotlight on Article 17 Today is National Child Day. A day when people across the country take time to celebrate Canada’s most precious resource our children. It’s a day to celebrate the family and think about how adults affect the development of children close to them. National Child Day was proclaimed by the Government of Canada on March 19th, 1993 to commemorate two historic events for children: the adoption of the United Nations Declaration on ...the Rights of the Child in 1959, and the UN adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989. Each year the Canadian Child Care Federation selects a right to shine a light on. In the midst of the uncertain times this COVID pandemic is causing, we thought article 17 was fitting. Article 17 (in child friendly language) Children shall have access to information from national and international sources. The media shall encourage materials that are beneficial, and discourage those which are harmful to children. Children of all ages are concerned and want to know what COVID means to them and their day to day lives. Listed below are online resources from credible organizations that will help you as an educator and/or parent, provide access to information in an age appropriate way thus celebrating and upholding the Convention on the Rights of the Child. https://www.cps.ca//blog-blogue/how-can-we-talk-to-kids-ab https://www.anxietycanada.com//talking-to-kids-about-covi/ https://www.canada.ca//cor/resources-parents-children.html
