In my mid-teens I made the decision to become a vegetarian. It was an ethical choice following a high-school seminar I went to in which the speaker addressed the reality surrounding humane treatment of animals who were farmed, slaughtered and transported for meat. I was appalled. Shorty after, my parents took me to the Royal Winter Fair (I am forever grateful for my life-changing trips to this event as a child living in the heart of the city). Unaware of my newfound knowledg...e, they bought me a lamb burger for lunch... which was pretty much what tipped me over the edge! The problem as that neither I, nor my parents, had any idea how to adequately nurture me with the new dietary restrictions I’d suddenly decided upon. And so began my relationship with eating ALL the pasta and cheese! So also began issues with low iron (anemia at times), little to no B vitamins, hormone fluctuations (my age didn’t help this), and weight gain (I was never a small person so this made mood and self-confidence super blah). It wasn’t until I started dating a guy in my early 20’s whose family was so meat-focussed that I started to eat it again (peer pressure is real!)! I was a meat eater again until early 2020 when I learned that my son has a severe intolerance to beef and a sensitivity to dairy. This really set that ball rolling for looking for alternative sources to animal protein and animal nutrients. Thankfully by this time I had a strong footing in this industry and was able to educate myself much more about animal-free diets. It’s been a learning curve as we work together to nurture overall health, gut health, skin health and mood with whole, plant-based foods within my family. We still fish and (my daughter and I eat) eggs, but you won’t find any meaty beasts in this house (unless Kay is occasionally gobbling up a happy meal for a treat ). My point (besides cracking a door into my personal life) is this: If you choose to eliminate ANY food, make sure you have the right support to do so. Educate yourself, consult with a dietitian or nutritionist and do it right! . . . . . #pescatarianlife #nutritionmatters #healthylifestyle #nutrition

Here’s to a new journey of self-discovery, self-discipline, and uncharted photo shoot territory. #holyshitweredoingthis This has been on the agenda for some time, but I fell off the photo shoot rails (and a few other rails!) in October when I lost two souls who were close to me, in rapid succession.... Grief is wild how it sneaks up without warning, or lingers in the background like a cloud. It’s taken me months to move away from about a billion different emotions weighing heavily every day. Although they are still present, they are becoming less daunting. This journey for me is about taking control of controllables in a time when so much shit is OUT OF MY CONTROL. It is NOT about fitting a standard or mold. It is NOT about trying to impress. It is NOT because I don’t feel beautiful the way I am. It IS about what I drone on and on about all the time... ...embracing, facing, and challenging myself to develop mental and physical toughness. It’s about harnessing and applying confidence, empowerment, self-awareness, knowledge, and pride for how far I have come. Holy shit, a lot has happened over the past few years. I’m ready to get after something JUST. FOR. ME. Let’s get this @amandajeanfit_ ! . . . . . #doitforyou #fitover40 #fitnessmotivation #over40 #ageisjustanumber #femaleentrepreneurs #momlife #bodybuilding #fitnessjourney #workingonmyself #photoshootprep #mindsetiseverything #fillyourcup #goals #motivation #healthylifestyle #successmindset #believeinyourself #healthymom #newjourneybegins #embracethejourney #changeyourlife

I’m gonna leave this here just in case... Happy new year!

Keswick Fitness & Wellness 24.12.2020

I hope you’re allowing your goals to change as your life does. Your goals, your expectations... they don’t need to be static. Give yourself permission to let go if you need to.... Times change... we face different challenges and successes, we transition through various obstacles and open doors, we learn, we experience, we move, we grow, we fall, we get back up. This, along with many other lessons, I have learned this year. The past year has brought with it great sadness, enormous gratitude, continuing awareness and hope. Although it’s been unlike any other year, I remind myself that the past was not without hardship as well. And yet, here we are, on the other side of those events. We will make it through. And though you may be lonely, take comfort in the fact that you’re not alone. Allow your goals to shift, change, and transform with your experiences, knowledge and emotions. For me, the past several months have been about survival. Prioritizing the health, well-being, and the safety of my family. In the summer I was amped up to do a photo shoot for just after my 41st birthday... a goal I had to showcase to MYSELF how strong I could be- represented by a physical transformation. I may just get there again. We’ll see. But that’s not where I am now. Things have shifted. I realize that my strength today needs to be is represented by the fact that we are OK. Our basic needs are met. I am asking for help when I need to. I am providing as best as I can, and I am staying strong for my family. Does this sound like something you can relate to? Because if you’ve been waiting for someone to say, it’s ok that you’re not in the same headspace as you were a few months (or a year) ago, CONSIDER IT SAID. I am accepting that I am where I need to be. Yes, some days it annoys me. And no, I don’t always know where I’m going. But I’m trying not to be hard on myself about it, because I don’t deserve more pressure. And neither do you. I hope you are not hard on yourself. Allow your goals to change. Look after yourself. And if you want to set new goals- do it. Life is not static. It is dynamic. Please afford yourself the freedom and love to be kind to yourself.

As things morph and change with the times, so too does my IG handle. As I expand my virtual reach and step (literally) out of my comfort zone and into other areas of this vast industry I think it’s important to reflect that. I am not JUST Keswick Fitness. I am also Lisa Tomlinson. My small business, Keswick Fitness & Wellness, remains alive despite the roller coaster ride of 2020 and (to beloved friends & local clients) I can’t wait for the day when we can train together... again. Until then I’ll humbly be me, grateful to make an impact wherever I can. What are you fuelling yourself with during this pandemic? Don’t let my salad fool you. I too have been eating my feelings from time to time. Overindulging in high sugar or starchy foods that make my brain think I am comforted. This comfort usually last about 5 seconds before I immediately want to eat more nutrient-void food that is actually causing my brain to be miserable and my body to store energy I don’t need!! ... Its ok to eat treats. I encourage my clients to ENJOY food!! Food is amazing. But it’s important to keep treats as TREATS and not staples (hey self, are you reading this?!? ). BUT REALLY. When I eat this salad with avocado, tomato, egg and spinach (also my favourite dressing that is NOT diet or low fat, I feel satiated, satisfied. My body is receiving fuel it needs- healthy fat, protein, and nutrient-dense carbohydrate. My portion size makes sense... unlike my gigantic bowl of white pasta with Oreos for dessert. This will NOURISH my BRAIN and my body. Not leave it restless, agitated or feeling out of control, anxious, or depressed. And I don’t know about you, but I could use all the amazing feelings of accomplishment and positivity from controlling the CONTROLLABLE factors in my life these days! #controlthecontrollables #keepitsimple #nourishyourbrain #healthybrain #healthyeating #nourish #youareincontrol #fitnessandnutritioncoach #listentoyourbody #notadiet #bewell #youareworthit

Just because it’s not happening right now doesn’t mean it’s not going to happen. ~ Read that again. ~ Far too often we place expectations on ourselves. Deadlines. Timelines by which we measure our success.... But WHAT IF during this particular timeline we have set for ourselves, we actually become successful at something else that causes us to deviate from our original plan? What if somethings requires our immediate attention? What if this is a pressing issue that is of the utmost importance? Because we have deviated, redirected, or learned of new priorities does this mean that we are not successful? No. It means that what we originally thought was important isn’t our current path. Sometimes basic priorities take over, and that’s OK. Sometimes we realize that the timing isn’t right, and that’s OK. Sometimes we need to go back to basics, and that’s OK. In this fast paced world we have become so pre-occupied with pre-set notions and guidelines and deadlines that we often lose sight of how important it is to be kind to ourselves when things DON’T GO AS PLANNED. Even when we DO OUR BEST. In this case, it serves no purpose to engage in that negative self-talk that comes all-too easily. It doesn’t help us move forward with gusto when we criticize ourselves for failing. Instead, let’s commend ourselves for realizing that it’s not time to pursue what we originally set out to do. Let’s all ourselves to proceed with grace along a path that requires our immediate attention. Let’s treat ourselves as we would a friend or a child going though a period of transition, and offer ourselves kindness and gentility. When the time is right, it will happen. If that time is not right now, then wait for it. Be kind as your attention shifts focus. And keep on slayin’. #keepslaying #itsok #bekindtoyourself #yourjourney #therearenodeadlinesondreams #takeyourtime #transition #changeispossible #positiveselftalk #youareworthy #nopressure #slowdownmama #mompreneur #youareenough #yourareworthit

HEY PEOPLE LOOKING FOR A BOOST!! I am talking to YOU! I am happy to announce that I am now ready to take on a couple more beautiful souls in December who are pumped to make some changes, feel happier, healthier, and more in control when so many things are out of our control!... As we go through more lockdowns and closures I'm working hard to do as much virtual coaching as possible in order to keep people moving and feeling strong, mentally and physically. I still have a spot or two available for in-person training within my home studio for the right person, but I have limited that significantly due to the current situation. For anyone interested, here's the virtual jam. Trust me, it's an amazing opportunity to level up your game. YOUR INVESTMENT: 1 or 3 months of virtual coaching (dm for pricing schemes!) Your time (as much or as little as you want) Your energy (I ask you to do your BEST and that's 100% to me!) Your commitment (don't be scared - you determine this!) WHAT YOU GET OUT OF IT: a PERSONALIZED physical training program with training days and exercises written out, described, and strategically planned (this developed by yours truly and is based on what YOU have, and what YOU want achieve) a PERSONALIZED plan of attack for reaching your nutritional goals (for some this includes a macro nutrient breakdown but can be as simple as giving you some knowledge that can help you start making healthier choices based on your goals) Access to me all the time- I'll be in your corner rooting for you, answering questions, and providing demos any time you need them A weekly official check-in with either quantitative measurements, qualitative ones, OR simply a cheerleader call to see how you are making out (this will vary depending on client needs) If this sounds like it might be something that could work for you be sure to let me know ASAP. A year ago tonight I was on my way to the hospital in an ambulance after Kay had been misdiagnosed with croup (and I’m pretty sure I haven’t had a good nights sleep since! PTSD is real). I held an oxygen tube a millimeter from her nose while she slept that night because she refused a mask. If I moved the alarm would sound that her oxygen was too low. She went through numerous nebulizer treatments and all kinds of other stuff - X-ray, fever control, dex - stuff I remember happ...ening but it’s a blur. We were initially told she wouldn’t be able to stay at Southlake. They didn’t have room. What a terrifying thought in a terrifying moment. ... I know many of you have had terrifying experiences with loved ones. You know how scary it is to face endless amounts of uncertainty and I commend you for getting through those scary moments... Thankfully the hospital was able to make room at the last moment. ~~ The RT we had was phenomenal. And the nurses were incredible. I’m sure they saved her. Now my daughter’s asthma is controlled with traditional medicine and as much non-traditional medicine (which is mostly just eating the right foods!) as I can incorporate. This is partly why I am one of the overly cautious people during Covid. Respiratory viruses now scare the crap out of me. The idea of our hospital being too full to accept a patient (with ANY serious ailment) is terrifying - especially when you (or your child) are the patient. Nurses, I will forever be grateful to you! Respiratory therapists, you are life savers! Doctors, I am endlessly grateful for those of you who have LISTENED, and helped! Paramedics, (although one of mine was clearly in the wrong profession and totally dropped the ball ) you have the courage to leap into emergency action every day and are heros! Dispatch, you are the glue who hold the emergency response together! This is my medical staff/first responder/frontline working badass appreciation post- from my whole family to yours!! Ps. Wear the damn mask!! #frontlineworkers #frontlineheroes #nursesrock #respiratorytherapistsrock #paediatrics #asthma #asthmaawareness #washyourhands #wearthedamnmask

I’ve spent a lot of years being hateful toward myself about my body. At times an inner voice has screamed at my body about not being enough. I realize now that these are the eerie echoes of words I’d heard about myself from not-so-good people in my life who I afforded too much influence over my self-image.... This could be why on days of difficulty I still struggle with body image. This, combined with the outpouring of unrealistic expectations from (social) media can really be a mind fuck some days. I mean, this body gave birth to two INCREDIBLE beings!! How on earth could I ever be anything other than grateful toward it, right?!? If only it were that simple. For quite some time I have been recognizing and challenging the toxic negative thoughts that have been embedded from a history of emotional anguish. Here’s my reality check when I need it. I continually acknowledge that (for me) the aesthetic component of my journey comes second to the peace that my mind finds from movement. This allows me freedom to enjoy more movement and sometimes deviate from structure. I realize that my successes are not measured only by quantitative means. My value is not measured by numbers. And I remind myself daily that my body is allowed to shift and change as I move through the ups and downs of life. ~~~~~ If you happen to be extra hard on yourself right now maybe ask yourself why. Challenge those thoughts. Ask where they come from. If you need to make a change you so don’t look down on yourself, you have the power to do that. And if you’re doing the best damn job you can do under the current circumstances- you’re already ahead, my friend. #bodyimage #selmprovement #selfimage #empowerment #womensupportingwomen #challengeyourself #tuneoutthenoise #youarebeautiful #youareenough #youarenotyourthoughts #stayfocused #mybodyismybody

It’s amazing how things can change so quickly. This time about 5 weeks ago I was deep in the beginning process of prepping for my first photo shoot with my wonderful and supportive coach @amandajeanfit_ . Dedicated to macro tracking on a strategic reverse dieting plan. Pumped, dedicated, super stoked about feeling so ready to develop through this next stage of my journey. Fast forward several weeks, and it’s the furthest thing from my mind.... Following great loss and grief, restructuring and rethinking of new business models and ideas, parenting through social, emotional and financial elements of this pandemic, I am now eating as intuitively as possible (and battling emotional eating) and am hyper focused on my entire reason for starting this business: MOVEMENT FOR MENTAL HEALTH. I am allowing exercise to be an outlet for stress, anxiety, uncertainty and emotional unrest. And it’s helping me immensely. Reminder: It’s OK AND NECESSARY to shift your focus as many times as you need to - life will always hand us unexpected challenges. Keep in mind that it will never be too late to refocus, or try again, and (sometimes) again and AGAIN. But without the mental and emotional component being in the right place, it will be that much more difficult to proceed. If you need to... press pause. Cheers to all the folks feeling all the feels in reset mode right now. You have my support. I appreciate your difficulties and efforts. If I ever hear someone say I can’t do that, I cringe. Almost ANYTHING can be modified for your ability and skill level. If your gym or fitness program makes you feel anything less than capable you need a new one!! Take this exercise for example. A high plank with lateral rope pull that challenges core strength and stability to the max. Cognitive engagement and consideration are at play as we work together, and need to be careful with how we handle the rope when passing t...o the next person. Spatial awareness is kicking in as we are careful with the rope AND cautious to maintain social distance. We have a focus on rotational core strength as my clients reach through with their opposite arm to take the rope from the neighbouring body. We are challenging coordination, balance, stability and mobility. Several of these ladies are over 60. We have a variety of body types and skill levels... and everyone is DOING IT. Yes, we have modified planks. Yes, for those who can’t plank in this exercise they can still facilitate core engagement from a modified quadriped position. Here you can see that we make it work. Many of these ladies struggle with arthritis, limited mobility, or previous injury. ALL of them have felt the benefits of movement and experienced strength gains, pain reduction and mental toughness progressions as a result of performing exercises that work for THEIR bodies. To reiterate... with proper guidance, support, perseverance, effort and modifications- you CAN do it. #fitnessfun #trainoutside #personaltrainer #youcandoit #fitnessisforeveryone #exerciseismedicine #youareworthit #fitnesscoaching #nutritioncoaching #morethanagym #healthycommunity #advocateforyourself #fitwomen #healthywomen #healthylifestyle

Yesterday I asked in my story, how do you nurture your mental health? We got sooo many amazing contributions to this discussion... dancing songwriting ... nature walks fresh air conversation art reading YES. What wonderful ways to help our minds settle, reset, or slow down be present. I have one more to add: It may surprise you that your mental health is JUST as important as your physical health... and what can be even more surprising is that the two are completely connected. Have you ever felt butterflies in your stomach before an important event? I know I have. In fact, since I was a child my nerves have cause me all kinds of GI discomfort. So it’s no surprise that it goes the other way too. What happens in our gut directly impacts our cognitive function, our mood, and our emotions. In fact, did you know that about 90% of our serotonin (a feel good chemical) is manufactured in the gut?! Did you know that what happens in our gut (which has its own micro biome) DIRECTLY impacts our immune function?! It’s not wonder that when we eat crap, we feel like crap physically AND mentally! Try to start noticing what foods help your body AND your brain feel good. For me, when I eat too much dairy, gluten, and sugar my mood is dramatically effected. I feel foggy, tired, down, unmotivated AND my joints ache. My arthritis acts up, I’m bloated and my feet get angry. GROSS!! Nurture your mental health with as many whole, unprocessed foods as possible to help digestion, nutrient absorption, and OVERALL wellness (boost your mood with food)! After some small changes you will be surprised how intense of a connection you can feel between your mental health and your gut health! #nourishmentalhealth #eatformentalhealth #guthealth #guthealthmentalwealth #gutbrainconnection #eatingformentalhealth #nutritioncoach #personaltrainer #wellness #wellnesscoach #fitnessandnutrition #virtualcoaching #fuelyourbodyright #fuelyourmind #eatwholefoods
