Some photos of the Kettle Valley Trail. First few days leaving Midway the trail was dry but just outside Beaverdell now and still lots of snow on the trail. So ...switching into sled and winter tent for this next section. Between Midway and Hope the trail is 490km and a great hike, bike ride or horse back journey. Store in Midway, store in Rock Creek and Beaverdell so easy to resupply on first 50km. Because of Covid I am meeting Louisa in van for supplies. Under 1000km now till I paddle into Victoria and Mile zero. Getting really excited. See more

Rural Economic Recovery (RER) program grants! Today two significant projects were announced in our riding, and both the Osoyoos airport & KVR Trail received gr...ants for improvements. These projects will both help create jobs and provide new economic opportunities to help our communities recover The KVR trail system development received $450,000 for the Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association, to invest in the Kettle Valley Rail (KVR) Trail, including infrastructure improvements and advance implementation of the KVR master plan. At the same time, six projects at the Osoyoos Airport received funding through Osoyoos Airport Development Society for improvements there. Good news for investing into our region with projects that will help nurture economic development for years to come! https://news.gov.bc.ca/releases/2021FLNRO0010-000310 https://www.totabc.org/rail-trails

Thanks to Pat Royce who recently shared another wonderful old Kelowna photo from the 1920s with our group! Pictured is The Coast Kootenay Limited crossing the C...anyon Creek Trestle. Built during the period from 1910 - 1915, the KVR (Kettle Valley Railway) was known as the Kootenay to Coast Connection. The original wooden trestles used for the bridges were to be replaced every 15 years. After 1956, the wooden structures were treated with creosote, which extended their lives to around 30 years from the previous 15 year cycles. At the time of the Okanagan Mountain fire the trestles were all 4th generation having being built from 1958 to 1962. See more

Open your eyes to the beauty of Fall. The Nelson Izu-Shi Friendship garden at Cottonwood Falls park is a splendor of jewel tones. The sound of the water, soft...ness of the leaf covered paths, the maples, and stones to sit, pause and reflect on the beauty around us. LNT #4 Leave What You Findeg: flowers and artifacts Our fourth Leave No Trace principle is called ‘Leave What You Find’ and very simply, is just that! Remember... that sense of wonderment you felt as you discovered a beautiful rock, flower, plant or archaeological artifact? Wouldn’t it be just as amazing for someone else to rediscover?! This principle can be broken into three components: MINIMIZE SITE ALTERATIONS Leave areas as you found them; do not dig trenches for tents or construct lean-to’s, tables, chairs, or other rudimentary improvements. Consider the idea that good campsites are found and not made. AVOID DAMAGING LIVE TREES AND PLANTS Never hammer nails into trees for hanging things, hack at them with hatchets or saws, or cut or trample tree saplings or seedlings. Carving initials into trees is unacceptable! Picking a few flowers might seem like it does not have any great impact, but if every visitor did this, there would be a significant impact! Instead, try out your photography skills and take a picture, or sketch the beautiful image. Knowledgeable campers may enjoy an occasional edible plant or berry but be careful not to deplete the surrounding vegetation or disturb plants- others, especially wildlife, may depend on that as their food source. LEAVE NATURAL OBJECTS AND CULTURAL ARTIFACTS Natural objects of beauty or interest such as antlers, petrified wood or coloured rocks add to the mood of the backcountry and should be left so others can experience that sense of discovery. Take note that in some areas it is illegal to remove natural objects. Cultural artifacts found on public lands are protected; it is illegal to remove or disturb archaeological sites, historic sites, or artifacts. : Natalie Worrall : Natalie Worrall, Tündi Murphy #leavenotrace #leavewhatyoufind #artifacts #wildflowers #hopemountaincentre
