As we begin Q2 of 2020 it appears that the stringent protective and safety measures taken by BC and the other provinces have worked to slow the spread of Covid-19. However, most of those will remain in place until Summer and all of us will be forever touched by this. Stay safe.

Its not often I think back to my decade as a radio news reporter in Northern BC prior to starting my public relations career, after all its been over 25 years since I hung up the microphone, but on Friday, November 23, 2018 all that changed. I was the special guest of CBC Daybreak North - Northern British Columbia (Northern BCs CBC Morning Show) - I got to sit in the studio and watch the entire program and talk to host Carolina de Ryk about the early days. Fabulous Friday Sept 15 for an Appreciation BBQ to say Thanks to the great team at Pacific BioEnergy Prince George who worked alongside members of the Prince George Fire & Rescue Dept. for the last week of August to contain and conclude the smoulder incident in one of two large pellet silos. Special thanks to John Swaan for slow-roasting some of his famous wood pellet cooked ribs. John also determined that injecting an inert gas into the silo as crews worked round-the-clock to empty it would reduce the risk of the situation escalating and once again, he was right! Thanks as well to Mayor Lyn Hall and MLA Mike Morris for attending and offering their thanks and appreciation to PBEC staff and the PG Fire & Rescue Dept for a Job Well Done.

NEWS RELEASE August 31, 2017 SILO INCIDENT AT PBEC PG PLANT NOW CONCLUDED Pacific BioEnergy Corporation (PBEC) has confirmed that the hazard of a smolder incident inside one of two large wood pellet storage silos has been mitigated and the risk of additional complications greatly reduced. Significant amounts of water were injected into the silo this morning in an effort to fully extinguish any remaining smoldering. Inert gas continues to be inj...ected into the silo to further reduce the risk of any additional problems occurring. The incident began in the early morning of August 24 when PBEC staff became aware of an unusual occurrence inside the storage silo. They quickly concluded that some of the pellets had begun to smolder. PBEC staff immediately initiated emergency response procedures which include contacting the Prince George Fire & Rescue department. The slow process of carefully removing the pellets from the silo was initiated and continued round the clock until this morning. Shawn Bells, Vice President, Operations for Pacific Bioenergy states We are extremely pleased that throughout the extinguishment process no one was injured. During the past week, our crews assisted by members of the Prince George Fire & Rescue department and a few contractors were able to safely remove approximately 3000 tonnes of pellets and extinguish those that were smoldering. Bells continued As we removed the pellets inert gas was injected into the silo to reduce the risk of additional complications with the extinguishment process. We concluded this morning that the smolder event posed no further significant risk. We began clean-up procedures and continue to remove the remaining saturated material. The safe conclusion to this smolder event reinforces the value of our emergency response plan, our intense focus on safety and the value of collaboration with Prince George Fire & Rescue department and our contractors. A thorough investigation into what started the incident will start soon. PBEC is Canadas second largest wood pellet producer with an annual production of 510,000 tonnes. PBEC owns a large wood pellet manufacturing plant in Prince George and also operates wood pellet plants in Chetwynd and Fort St John in partnership with Canfor. Since PBEC was founded in 1994 it has exported approximately 3.5 million tons of wood pellets to markets in Europe and Asia. PBECs PG plant has significantly helped improve air quality in Prince George by taking material formerly burned in beehive burners and using the material to produce renewable wood pellets for use in power plants in Europe and Asia. Ive been assisting the fabulous team at Pacific BioEnergy Corporations Prince George Plant with the on-going smolder in one of two large wood pellet storage silos. The incident began early Thursday morning and is expected to take the rest of the week to fully extinguish. The PBEC team has closely followed the emergency response and safety procedures since the outset. Made me wonder if other organizations emergency and safety response plans are current and ready to guide their staff through these difficult and stressful situations.
