Pile burning in Esler may produce visible smoke BC Wildfire Service will be burning piles of woody debris as part of a wildfire risk reduction project. Beginning July 13, 2020, through August 7, 2020; crews will be removing and burning fuels surrounding a communication tower in the Esler area, south west of Williams Lake, north of Kallyn Road. These piles will be burned to eliminate available fuels in the event of a wildfire, in order to prevent damage to the nearby communica...tion tower. Crews will be applying FireSmart principles by removing fuels from Zone 1, up to 10 meters from the tower, and thinning and pruning trees in Zone 2, 10-30 meters from the tower. These burn piles are considered Category 2 open fires and will comply with the Environmental Management Act and the Open Burning Smoke Control Regulation. Staff from the BC Wildfire Service will carefully prepare, control, and monitor these fires at all times. In order to minimize the amount of smoke generated, these piles will only be lit if conditions are suitable and allow for quick smoke dissipation. The exact timing of these burns will depend on weather, site conditions, venting conditions, and snow cover. To report a wildfire, unattended campfire or open burning violation, please call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone.

An update on real estate in the Cariboo region, July 8, 2020 The BC Northern Real Estate Board (BCNREB) reports 1786 properties sold through the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) in the first six months of 2020, down from the 2298 sales reported in the first half of 2019. The value of these properties was $538.6 million compared with $716.5 million in 2019. At the end of June, there were 3489 properties of all types available for purchase through the MLS of BCNREB, down from ...4073 at the same time last year. BCNREB President Shawna Kinsley comments: The first half of 2020 saw a significant decline in housing demand in the region, with sales in April reaching a low not seen since January 1988. Despite the region's struggling forestry, and mining and oil sectors, the decline in the second quarter was primarily due to the state of emergency declared by the province that implemented physical-distancing measures. This halted real estate activity across the province, which is highly reliant on in-person interactions. Moreover, significant job losses were reported in the services sector in the region, and large projects such as LNG and BC Hydro paused work that was deemed non-essential. Looking ahead, the British Columbia Real Estate Association expect MLS sales in the region to continue to be weak for the rest of the year due to the slowdown in economic activity brought on by the global pandemic. BCREA is forecasting that total MLS unit sales will fall by almost 18 per cent in 2020. Meanwhile, as the BC economy begins to gradually reopen and demand starts to pick up, resale supply will be slow to respond and the pace of new housing is expected to slow as well with housing starts forecast to fall almost 19 per cent in central regions like Prince George. As such, BCREA forecast MLS average prices to rise by 2.3 per cent in 2020.

Fox Mountain planned/controlled burn may produce visible smoke BC Wildfire Service crews plan to burn piles of woody debris near Williams Lake in the Fox Mountain area over several weeks to reduce wildfire risk in the area. Smoke and flames may be visible from Williams Lake and surrounding communities.... Firefighters could start igniting the piles as early as Wednesday, July 8, 2020 and end as late as Sept 29, 2020, depending on weather and site conditions. BC Wildfire Service personnel will be on site with firefighting equipment to monitor and control these burns at all times. This work is part of ongoing fuel management projects. Cariboo Fire Centre crews have piled up the accumulated debris at the treatment location. This treatment covers about 20.4 hectares north of the Fox Mountain subdivision, north of Gannett Road and Pheasant Drive. By removing this material, less fuel will be available to burn in the event of a wildfire and any such fire will burn with less intensity. These piles will only be lit if conditions are suitable and allow for quick smoke dissipation. These piles are considered Category 2 open fires and will comply with the Environmental Management Act and the Open Burning Smoke Control Regulation. This will help to minimize the amount of smoke generated. To report a wildfire, unattended campfire or open burning violation, call 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cellphone. In the know, ... Williams Lake, Celebrate Canada Day together - by staying apart. The City of Williams Lake will host a city-wide stay-apart to come-together virtual Canada Day celebration on July 1 to mark the nation’s 153rd birthday.... Although the traditional event in Boitanio Park is cancelled this year due to COVID-19, we encourage everyone to gather their small social circles, hold a BBQ in the back yard and test their general knowledge of Canadiana via video, posted on www.facebook.com/CMRCWL and the City website at www.williamslake.ca/CanadaDay. At noon, the Williams Lake Fire Department, RCMP and Central Cariboo Search & Rescue joined by the Lakers Car Club will also lead three separate processions throughout Williams Lake, followed by flyovers by members of the Williams Lake Flying Club at 1 p.m. It’s unfortunate we won’t be able to come together and celebrate Canada Day through the regular festivities and events that we all look forward to every year, said Mayor Walt Cobb. But we hope this virtual event will connect and inspire individual Canada Day celebrations throughout the City in people’s own homes and neighbourhoods. For a full list of the day’s events or to participate, follow the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex on Facebook at www.facebook.com/CMRCWL and our Canada Day website at www.williamslake.ca/CanadaDay
