Thank you to The Window Gallery YYZ for presenting this installation for the CONTACT Photography Festival. It was important that this work be exhibited in the Church-Wellesley Village to speak to and reflect the feelings affecting the community. Thank you to everyone who has provided thoughts and feedback on the work. I am happy to hear that people have been finding it a moving and resonant presence in the Village. For those who haven't seen it, the installation is on view for another two weeks (until June 2nd), at 558 Church Street (just north of Wellesley) in Toronto.

On view now until June 2nd: Missing Photographs by Kevin Cherry The Window Gallery YYZ, 558 Church Street (at Wellesley), Toronto A CONTACT Photography Festival Exhibition @contactphoto... Presented in collaboration with The 519 @the519 and ASAAP - Alliance for South Asian AIDS Prevention @asaaptoronto . ‘Missing’ is a reflection on grief, fear, shock, and anger surrounding the disappearances and murders of members of Toronto's Church-Wellesley Village community. Patterns of tape and torn paper left on utility poles evoke missing-persons notices posted throughout the neighbourhood over several years, haunting reminders of unspeakable tragedy and loss that have deeply scarred the community. The project is intended to acknowledge the shared grief that persists, and to create space for reflection to facilitate healing. . . Many thanks to everyone who supported me and provided feedback and encouragement during the process of developing this work. It was challenging to create work that speaks about such sensitive subject matter. But I feel it’s important for all of us in the community to find ways to acknowledge the difficult feelings we may carry around these events and how they have affected us. I hope that by creating and sharing this work with the community, that it will serve as a meaningful contribution. . Many thanks to The 519 @the519 and ASAAP @asaaptoronto for their collaboration and providing statements to accompany the exhibition, as well as for their work every day in helping to build the strength and resilience of Toronto’s LGBTQ2S communities. . Also many thanks to Smokestack Studio @smokestack.studio and Akasha Art Projects @akashaart for all of their support and assistance in the production and presentation aspects of this work. . Grieve. Honoured to have been asked to show work from my new series ‘Missing’ in the pop-up community space at Church and Wellesley (560 Church St) in Toronto. This space is being used to host healing circles for the community as we continue to move through all of the difficult feelings surrounding the disappearances and murders of members of our community. The healing circles are hosted by the Church-Wellesley Village BIA @churchwellesleyvillage and ASAAP - Alliance for South Asian... AIDS Prevention @asaaptoronto . The next one is on April 23rd. My hope is that this work will serve as an acknowledgement and reflection of the community’s grief and loss, to set a tone that can facilitate discussion and healing. . Following their display in the pop-up community space, these works will be moving next door to The Window Gallery YYZ for an installation there May 6 - June 2. More to come on that. . . . #toronto #torontovillage #churchwellesley #thevillageto #gayvillage #gaytoronto #gaycommunity #lgbttoronto #lgbtcommunity #lgbt #memorial #untilweresafe #photography #streetphotography #art #contemporaryart #torontoart #torontoartist #canadianart #canadianartist #gayartist #queerartist #fineartphotography See more
