Multiband Compression Most of the compressors we use in music production operate on what is known as the full-band principle, where the entire audio signal is processed via a single gain-control element. When gain reduction occurs, the whole signal level is reduced, just like turning down a volume control. Whenever a loud peak occurs it forces the compressor to act and the level of the whole signal is reduced until the loud event has passed. Multi-band compression isn’t speci...Continue reading
Creating Sustain and Musical Resonance with Compression Looking at the Audio Waveform diagram from the B to the D point, we will notice a drop in amplitude. What also happens is a drop in high-frequency response. As previously stated, most of the mid-range and high-frequency range are contained in the A part of the waveform. Immediately following a piano chord hit, is the action of the strings starting to vibrate. As the strings start to vibrate, high frequencies from the att...Continue reading
CREATING A RHYTHMIC IDEA If you look at the above diagram you will notice there are 4 sections approximating the duration of an audio signal as measured in volume over time. For the above example I am going to use a piano chord hit. In the A area, you have the attack of the hammers hitting the strings. This sound is percussive in nature and is basically composed of odd harmonic content ranging from approximately 2khz and above. If one could focus on just hearing only this par...Continue reading

MusiCounts is Canada's music education charity associated with CARAS and The JUNO Awards and they have been putting instruments in the hands of kids who need th...em most. Over the last 20 years, MusiCounts has awarded over ten million dollars worth of instruments from coast to coast to coast, and now it's our turn in London to help them get to the next level. We've now taken on that challenge to help music counts raise more funds here in London and Southern Ontario. Three venues; London Music Hall, Centennial Hall and Budweiser Gardens, from over the course of next year will donate one dollar from every concert ticket for every new show that goes on sale between todays announcement until the 2019 JUNO Awards to MusiCounts.
