As with any electri...cal appliance, a sump pump that is not properly checked and maintained may pose a fire hazard. Some things to look for: - ensure the pump does not run continuously (stuck on) - clear any debris in the basin - inspect the pump for excessive corrosion or sludge buildup - run a bucket of tap water through the system to clean it out a bit and test functionality - ensure the on/off switch and trigger mechanism are not impeded and function properly - ensure nothing is stored in the area of the pump and basin above and around (ex. boxes) - check the smoke detector in the room to ensure it is functioning properly A pump's motor that runs continuously as a result of a jam or malfunction can overheat and cause a fire.
