Kiwanis recognizes heroes: Loreena McKennitt , Lara St. John , Petya Stavreva, pianist and teacher , and our mystery guest! Loreena, Lara, Petya and our mystery guest graciously allowed the use of pre-recorded videos for "Celebrating the 20s". Loreena is an internationally-recognized performer who makes her home in Stratford. ... Lara is a Canadian-born, US-based violinist who is an alumna of the St Thomas and London Kiwanis Festivals, now with an international career. Petya is a respected pianist, educator and in-demand adjudicator who had been booked to adjudicate for the 2020 Stratford Kiwanis Festival. She readily agreed to record a performance for "Celebrating the 20s!" but also agreed to adjudicate for the first-ever Provincial Virtual Music Competition so we were happy to be given permission to use an existing recording. Our mystery guest is a beloved international Canadian singer who is also an alumnus of numerous Kiwanis Festivals. Kiwanis Festival is forever grateful to them for being so supportive. Kiwanis recognizes heroes: Rod Beattie & Alex Trebek This week we pay tribute to two beloved Canadians. Versatile Rod Beattie not only agreed to host the Kiwanis Festival's first-ever online benefit, he also served as creative collaborator, suggesting and developing the "Name the Centuries" concept. As he discovered, "Kiwanis" means "fooling around" in Ojibwe and we are so fortunate that he lent his special gifts to "fooling around" in this new medium to support the Kiwani...s Festival! Sudbury native Alex Trebek was the affable consummate professional who hosted the iconic game show Jeopardy! for 36 years. Intelligent and self-deprecating, he never accepted billing as the "star" of the show but rather as the "host", preferring to make the show and its contestants the stars. Kiwanis recognizes heroes: Shannon McCracken & Ben Smith Shannon and Ben are Ontario-based artists, teachers and adjudicators who readily agreed to participate in Kiwanis Festival's first-ever online benefit. Prior to COVID-19, Shannon was booked to adjudicate the 2020 Kiwanis Festival Stratford in Voice and Ben had generously agreed to appear in the live benefit concert. In the wake of the pandemic which cancelled both events, they led by example by recording their own pe...rformances which have become part of "Celebrating the 20s". Shannon was ably assisted by the long-distance pianist who provided her with a pre-recorded accompaniment. Ben drew on the expertise of a friend who assisted in making his recording. Kiwanis Festival is forever grateful to them for being trail-blazers. In doing so, they led by example for all those who may participate in Kiwanis Festival's first-ever virtual festival: they recorded their own performances using the technology available. Both performances used pre-recorded accompaniments: Dan did his own, and Barbara's came from an accompanist who was 100 miles away!
