After 10 years with a six figure photography business, I got comfortable. It’s no secret this year has been tough for the wedding photography industry. Despite most of my weddings having to cancel (and having to shut my gym business down for 2.5 months), I have been able to pivot (starting online businesses, diversifying, reimagining my pricing and offers, working on high-pay short burst projects etc) to generate income at will, with some months at 10-15k during shutdown. T...he funny part is, I think it’s just what I needed. The pivots were all things I have always wanted to focus more on and this pandemic gave me the space to indulge in my creativity and stop resting on my laurels! At times, I had to beat back the scarcity mindset. I know that I am reliable to seize opportunities, create from nothing, and design my own destiny. Fear and desperation doesn’t help me get there. Instead, I have a practice to embrace my centre (Rise of the Guardians movie anyone?) which is FUN and CREATION. It’s been a gift to be reminded that I am still the 21 yr old who started her business hungry, full of spark and wonder. Except that I’m not. I’m wiser, I have learned more skills (including how to work smarter) and have a team that supports the ever-growing vision. December 5th and 6th (after 1:30pm) and December 12th and 13th (after 4:00pm) Location is at 1807 Store St. Each session will be up to 15 minutes of shooting and up to 10 minutes for selecting & printing images and processing payment. Tiffany started out as an airbnb tenant. I said hey you’re pretty cool, do you want to just move in? She said yes and our friendship began as housemates for the next year and a half. I meet most of my closest people in offbeat ways, much like Tiffany which brings me to Kiana. Tiffany, Adam and I would stay up late some nights discussing the definition of romantic love and how it differs from platonic love. We concluded that it’s the same minus a distinct physical intimacy.... Love is love. The first time Tiffany invited Kiana over, she was introduced as a new friend from work. Bright and chatty, she fit right in. As our girl’s night continued, I noticed an excitement between them that I couldn’t quite place. The next morning I was only 80% surprised when Tiffany told me that they had fallen in love. Two straight girls who found their person in each other, in this life and in every life. Their courage and commitment has moved and inspired everyone around them to be brave and have it all. It’s an honour to be their friend and their official love story photographer (I captured their proposal 6 months after they met). It was only fitting that I capture their wedding as well - something that would not have been possible pre-pandemic as I was unavailable on their original date. It’s been my favourite thing about this year. I have been working on something very special as a way to celebrate him and our LoLo community! I'm stoked to announced the live premiere of Adam's documentary that I am making for this Saturday! Obviously, this is a throwback. China December 2019. It’s hard to believe that so much could happen since then. I’ve been fairly quiet on social media about my pandemic experience, processing, pivoting and practicing gratitude that those that I love are safe. One by one, most of my 2020 weddings had to cancel, rendering free summer weekends for me for the first time in ten years. I’m addition, Adam and I had to shutdown our gym (@loveon_lifton) for 2.5 months. ... Seemingly overnight, it felt like both my businesses went up in smoke and the overwhelming financial implications felt impossible. We had to cancel our own wedding. The worst of times was crying in my bath water. Big quiet drops of salt. The best of times was homemade pizza, laughter with the room mates and a surrendered way of being forgotten in a decade of hustle. To all the local businesses, your resilience is a legacy. To my 2020 wedding couples, you are warriors. As a fellow pandemic bride, I see your disappointment, your sadness and frustration. I also see your commitment to proclaim your love in a distinct way, your way. In these times, that might look like planning 3-4 different weddings just to have each fall through along with any sense of control you have. We changed our wedding from 100+ to a 30 person elopement in Tofino only to have to cancel that a month out due to new covid vacation rental laws. There’s nothing I love more than capturing artists in their element. There’s a special kind of magic that happens during the shoot that I can’t even find the words to describe.
