Moose Skullpture #2 features a moose, an elk, a white tail and a big horn sheep. Skull is carved by hand from butternut, also known as white walnut. Measuring 40" x 40" it is definitely the older brother of the last one. Drop a comment and let me know what you think
Butternut moose skull getting some oil for your eyeballs. Hanger bolts are in, which are definitely the most stressful part of the process, trying to get them lined up right. The antlers are completed so I'm just waiting on a wall mount for the final reveal.
Sneak peek at what I've been working on recently. Second of a series. This time around the antlers were so different in size I decided to carve them one at a time. The left is near finish, the right has a few hours to go. A little more asymmetrical than symmetrical but we're moving forward!
Couple of live edge coffee tables finished up last week. The first one is siberian elm with black epoxy, the second is douglas fir. Very happy with how these turned out! **Sold**
Handcarved butternut moose skull near completion. Time to get started on the antlers. I've been feeling a real creative block with the antlers, I think I'm intimidated by the sheer size of them. Stay tuned. I'll get it sorted.
She's just a little bit distracting. Ruka loves the smell when I'm carving antler and she gets any decent sized pieces I cut out. Happy pooch. #shopdog #antlercarving #bordercollie
New 3D brisket board finished up for a customer. Quite the process but so satisfying. This is a hefty one measuring 15" x 23" x 1-1/4" cherry, maple, walnut.
Those are some nice shadows! Glad I ended up going with the wall mount. A friend recommended a bracket used for hunting trophies by skullhooker that worked great. Thinking I'll have to make another... Handcarved black walnut moose skullpture with matching set of power carved antlers.
Always feels nice coming back to bark carving between bigger projects. 5" x 22" greenmen hand carved in cottonwood bark.
Handcarved black walnut moose skull, with a matching set of power carved moose antlers. A study in asymmetric symmetry. The left antler has 6 points while the right has 8. Wall mount from @skullhooker en route. This piece is currently available. Ballpark 120 hrs over 2 months.
This one is finally a wrap. Handcarved black walnut moose skull, with a matching set of power carved moose antlers. A study in asymmetric symmetry. The left antler has 6 points while the right has 8. More photos to come. Also I'm not in love with the base so I have a wall mount on order from @skullhooker This piece is currently available. Ballpark 120 hrs over 2 months.
Moose skull handcarved in black walnut after some polyurethane. Final touches to the antlers then he's ready for mounting! Stay tuned
Any last minute shoppers out there?
This one is complete. I'm in love with the base! 40+ hours power carving with a foredom. Natural moose shed and salvaged maple burl. I hope everyone has a great weekend!
New moose antler! I started milling up a nice piece of maple burl for the base. I'll post some more photos once it's mounted. Anyone else miss camping already?
Moose antlers are off to their forever home today! It's always hard seeing something you put so many hours into walk out the door, but it's a feeling of pure joy seeing peoples reactions. So grateful to be able to do what I love, and feel the love and support from all of you. Wintergreen is online till December 12th, and their are plenty of local artisans who could use some love and support. Head over to wintergreenmarket.ca to check it out! @skcraftcouncil
Walnut moose skull in progress. Hope everyone had a spooky Halloween! 3 pieces of 2" walnut laminated together. I will be mounting carved moose antlers to this eventually... Wintergreen fine craft market started today with the @skcraftcouncil We've gone online so check it out!!
Another moose antler in progress, decided to keep the theme going. Ways to go yet!
TheJackalopeis amythical animalof North American folklore, a fearsome critter, described as ajackrabbit withantelope horns. Many jackalopetaxidermy mounts, including the original, are made with deerantlers.
"Social Distance Handshake" basswood, rosewood, walnut. This piece was commissioned by the Regina Drug Treatment Court for their 100th graduation ceremony. Made @ctvregina for about 5 seconds.
Custom cane finished up and out the door!A family came together and commissioned me to craft this for their father, whose mobility is degrading. I was asked to turn a symbol of weakness into a symbol of strength. What an absolute pleasure to create something special that he will use everyday.
Carved antler pendant from this evening, fun one! White tail. For sale.
Finished the moose antlers off with a purpleheart and bubinga floating shelf. They're attached with a screw into a hole in the base of the antler, so they're removable. This matching set was gifted to me and I am so grateful it was. For Sale. DM
Finished owl carving i forgot to post. Gifted to the old man. After I finished it I didn't see a bird in the yard till i moved it, so I think I did something right. @ Regina, Saskatchewan
The Jackalope is coming along! Starting to peek out and say hello. Heavy distractions, commissions, and all this beautiful weather have been keeping me from this laminated piece of white ash. Life is crazy, change is inevitable, and time blows away like sawdust. Leaving a sculpture of your life, till it's nothing but a memory. Hope everyone is keeping well.
Hands finished up just in time for assembly and delivery, very interesting commission, stay tuned.
Owl from yesterday, painted the shed a couple weeks ago. Chainsaw carving to a woodcarver is like spray painting is to a brush artist. So much fun, still going to fine tune this one a bit.
New commission getting started. I miss shaking hands with people, and I hope it doesn't become a thing of the past.
2nd moose antler finished up from the matching set. I hope everyone is keeping well out there!

Custom pantry finished up and ready for paint. Adjustable shelving not pictured. Can't say i miss working with mdf but still an enjoyable project. Im starting a batch of cutting boards this weekend if you want to throw an order in, then I'll be back to carving! #antisocialdistancing... @ Regina, Saskatchewan
I was fortunate enough to have this moose antler gifted to me. Very happy with how it turned out and I'm already planning the next one.
Few serving boards/ charcuterie boards finished up. I collaborated with the lovely @relicsofawolfe and inlaid some stones into the handles. These were going to be for sale at @mackenzie.art.gallery Bazaart but you knows how that goes... DM if your interested. 1-4 top down.. The first one is spoken for. @ Regina, Saskatchewan
Took a stab at my first antler carving this past weekend, nice not having to worry about grain direction but damn it's stanky.
Got a coat of tung oil on this rosewood deer skull today. So satisfying. Thanks @claychic.ceramics for the sheds!
"Spectral temple" was inspired by my trip to the @alexgreycosm chapel of sacred mirrors this past summer with @a.fawnwolfe . What a bounty of creativity and open minds. Stay safe out there people. Basswood, maple, bubinga, tigers eye, labradorite, agate, tiger iron. 27"x9"x12" #artismyreligion #journeywithin
spectral temple 27x9x12 @ Regina, Saskatchewan
This rib cage was never finished so it's back on the operating table along side some moose antlers that were gifted to me. Time to learn something new.
Going shed hunting this weekend, wish me luck! Also my dremel finally died and i upgraded to a #foredom so I'm pretty psyched about that.
Deer skull in progress, still need to find a nice pair of sheds. Carved from a single piece of rosewood.
Finally finished working on my website and I treated myself to a lesson in woodturning. Love trying new things with wood much more than computers that's for sure. Kgwoodcraft.ca feedback appreciated! Time to get back in the shop:)
If your in need of any assistance making bubbles head over to tropical dreams! They're a great team and you can check out my manta on display at their shop.
Decided to experiment with laminated plywood, and i felt like doing another manta. Grain and current.
Fun little project from today. IMO everything looks better in wood.
2nd day at wintergreen fine craft market, 10-6 today, 10-4 tomorrow. Im in the shumiatcher room, come say hello! @skcraftcouncil
Looking like i might have this one finished just in time for WinterGreen this weekend. Come check out all the crafty artisans, and stop in to say hello. Friday is sip and shop so you can enjoy a bevy while you take it all in.
"I am fire, I am death" 16" x 9" x 12" Just finished this Smaug inspired dragon head last week. Carved from black walnut, eyes were painted with acrylics. Complete with an incense cone of course! @ Regina, Saskatchewan
Manta Ray 26" x 30" Just put a final coat of lacquer on this one this morning, then I suspended it with 40plb fishing line. Carved from teak and beechwood. @ Regina, Saskatchewan
If you've been following my story I've been picking away at this dragon since August. Just got it mounted last night and I can nearly see the finish line! Inspired by Smaug if your a #hobbit fan. "Work in progress" 16x9x9 carved from #blackwalnut @ Regina, Saskatchewan
Crikey! Finished this one up today, 21" long and carved from cottonwood bark. This is the second crocodile I've carved from bark though this one is twice the size as the last. The eye is some kind of jasper i believe, found it on a hike so I'm not really sure.
This is a display cabinet i built and installed a few weeks ago that i never got around to posting. I was asked to match the lower hutch, which was built from rosewood. After agreeing i then realised how hard it is to find rosewood plywood or veneer. I ended up building it from bubinga which is actually an African rosewood. Think i got pretty close. The client was happy and at the end of the day that's all that matters. @ Regina, Saskatchewan
