*Throwback Thursday history* The Hazeldean Masonic Lodge was built in 1914 on what is now Young Road and is still being used for its original purpose. Initial trustees of this Masonic Lodge were John A. Cummings, Robert H. Grant and James E. Steele. The first meetings for this new Lodge were held in the Orange Hall until the Masonic Temple was ready. The Hazeldean Lodge No. 517 continues to holding meeting in this same building today, which is one of the oldest Masonic Lodges... in Ottawa (although with the COVID-19 pandemic, in person meetings have been temporarily been cancelled) Photo courtesy of Roger Young #kanata #KanataSouth #KatimavikHazeldean #tbt

The #MyKatimavikHazeldean contest is open for entries! Why not ask the kids to draw a picture of what they love about our community? Or get outside and take a photo of what you love while enjoying this beautiful day? We would LOVE to hear from you! We’ve also asked the KHCA Exec team to share what they love about this neighbourhood. Deb H, our Comms Officer, shared the following:... One of my favourite things about Katimavik-Hazeldean are the mature trees. I love that I can simply walk down my street and feel like I’m suddenly in a forest. They provide such beauty all year round with the lush green in summer, the brilliant colours in fall, the snow covered branches in winter and the new buds in spring. I feel that these trees really set our community apart. Details on how to enter: www.khca.on.ca/mykatimavikhazeldean

*Throwback Thursday history* This community has always known how to have a good time! In January 1901, a homecoming party for Boer War soldiers led to a spur-of-the-moment all night dance at the Hazeldean Orange Hall. As reported in the Jan. 22, 1901 issue of the Carleton Place Herald, this homecoming was quite the event. An arch was built at the junction of the 12th line (now Hazeldean Road) and the sideroad (now Young Road). The 12th line was decorated with flags and buntin...gs for over a mile. This was done to welcome home returning veterans, Sgt. S.H. Eagleson of the First Contingent and Pte. Manuel Bradley of the Second Contingent, who had both served in South Africa for over a year. At 1 p.m. on the Tuesday, both men were escorted to the Orange Hall from the Bradley’s home on the 12th line by the Committee of Management and two Fenian Raid veterans, John Kemp and James Boyd. At the Orange Hall, there were speeches and songs and there was a spur-of-the-moment decision to have a dance. An orchestra was rounded up and folks danced until well into the morning. *Throwback Thursday history* The Hazeldean Rural Telephone Company was established on July 12, 1909 with just 26 customers. It was a one-position switchboard set up in the Mulligan house at Hazeldean with the two Mulligan sisters as the first operators. It was established as a co-operative in which every telephone customer or subscriber was also a shareholder. The company eventually provided phone service in a 25-mile radius area around Hazeldean including Stittsville, Fallow...field, Twin Elm, Bells Corners and Richmond Around 1920, it moved out of private homes and there were about 215 customers. A central office building at Hazeldean became home for the switchboard, moving it out of private homes. Following the Second World War and the beginning of suburban growth, the Hazeldean Rural Telephone Company expanded its services and infrastructure to keep pace with the demand for new phone service. In 1958, the Hazeldean Rural Telephone Company had a two-position switchboard, employing eight operators and providing 24-hour service to 875 customers or subscribers. On Oct. 1, 1958, it was sold to the Bell Telephone Company and the operators were relocated to a building in Stittsville, which was used until a dial system was introduced in 1964 Photo courtesy of Roger Young #Kanata #KanataSouth #KatimavikHazeldean #tbt

*Throwback Thursday history* St. Paul's Anglican Church has been a prominent building within our community for almost 150 years. The original wooden church was built in 1874 (1st photo) and burned down in October 1935. Stately elm trees surrounding the church were also affected by the fire and its flaming bell tower crashed to the ground. The church was rebuilt with Nepean sandstone (2nd photo) and had its first service in 1937. That building was demolished in 2003 for the ne...w, existing church building, which opened in 2004, and remains in its original location on Young Road Photos courtesy of Roger Young #kanata #KanataSouth #KatimavikHazeldean #tbt

Thank you to the Community Voice Kanata for recognizing our K-H Community Heroes for March! This initiative was created as a way to make people feel good at a time when we are in quarantine or lockdown with this pandemic going on. We had to cancel a lot of events that really keeps the community spirit alive so this was a way of doing that. - Hayley Bennett, KHCA President

*Throwback Thursday history* Did you know that this area was well known for the high quality of its dairy products and Hazeldean even had a cheese factory? The Hazeldean cheese factory was located on the March township side of the town line. It operated from the 1880s to the 1920s when it was torn down. The cheese factory featured diamond shaped windows which was an architectural feature found in many such factories as well as barns of that era. Adam Abbott, who ran the gener...al store at that time, was also involved with the cheese factory serving as its secretary-treasurer Photo of cheese factory courtesy of Roger Young #Kanata #KanataSouth #KatimavikHazeldean #tbt

Katimavik Rink: While the boards are up, more snow is needed before the Katimavik rink crew can start on preparing the ice. We are happy to share some new improvements this year.
