The Kidney Foundation of Canada-Ontario Branch 12.05.2021

This award is presented in recognition of an individual who has provided outstanding leadership and service and has made a significant contribution, impact and commitment to the Ontario Branch. For decades, Greg Robbins has provided, energy, insight, and financial support that has had an impact on all levels of the Foundation, and most importantly, has improved the quality-of-life for patients and across Canada. He provided leadership at every level of the organization, serving as a Chapter President, the Ontario Branch president, and the National President a trifecta that is unprecedented in our organization. Congratulations and thank you to Greg - the recipient of the Alfred E. Coll Award of Excellence. http://ow.ly/KoKS50Esqyr #NVW2021

The Kidney Walk award is given to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the overall results of the Kidney Walks including financial, partnerships, in-kind, and/or public awareness. Belinda Robertson has been an enthusiastic and committed member of the Windsor Chapter’s Walk Committee for many years. She has been a Kidney Walk Champion for at least 5 years and captain’s a walk team, encouraging them each step of the way to reach their goals. Cathy Pennington ...is an amazing volunteer and ambassador for The Kidney Foundation. Cathy’s son Christopher lives with kidney disease. Christopher has been recognized for his commitment and leadership of the Goderich Kidney Walk, but it is no secret that it takes a team and Cathy has been there every step of the way supporting the effort. Cathy is the driving force behind many initiatives including an online auction and pizza fundraiser and continues to seek ways to sustain and build the local walk. The Sarnia Lambton Kidney Walk and its top fundraising Team Twisted Sister hit an all time high in 2020 raising over $50k, with Team Twisted Sister raising over $21k. Reaching these milestones was possible because of the many Kidney Walk Champions and supporters who stepped up and stepped out in new ways to support the walk. Congratulations and thank you to these incredible recipients of our Kidney Walk Award of Excellence. http://ow.ly/KoKS50Esqyr #NVW2021

Rita Dillon has been volunteering with The Kidney Foundation in the Niagara area since 2004. She volunteered with March Drive, but most notably has been the mastermind and lead of Niagara’s Tag Days third-party event. She coordinated student volunteers, locations and distributing the materials needed for event day to all the sites. She has raised over $63,000 or the equivalent of almost $4000 each year over those 16 years. Congratulations and thank you to Rita; the recipient of our Excellence in Fundraising Award. http://ow.ly/KoKS50Esqyr #NVW2021

At 12 years old, my son Brennan started to feel pain he had never felt before. Suspecting it could be his appendix, we took him to our family doctor. He recommended that we take Brennan to the hospital to have him checked out. Brennan was diagnosed with Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis or FSGS resulting in the eventual decline of his kidney function to a point where he needed dialysis. We began the process for a living transplant. On March 12, 2020, I found out I was a mat...ch. Only a few days later, on March 14th, we received a call that the surgery needed to be postponed because of the pandemic. It was absolutely devastating. Luckily, we got a call to reschedule and Brennan's transplant took place on September 16, 2020. Knowing the transplant would take place during the pandemic added a whole new level of stress for our entire family. Our worries were put at ease seeing how the hospitals and medical teams were working to keep us both safe. The most amazing moment was when I saw Brennan for the first-time post-transplant and was able to give him a hug. I was able to see how much healthier he looked and felt. It was an incredible moment for the both of us. Read the full story here: http://ow.ly/mCss50DAVM4 #FamilyDay

Thank you to Werger Realty Limited for sponsoring The Kidney Foundation's Online Auction beginning Monday November 23. Born and raised in downtown Toronto, the Werger brothers grew up in an environment that taught and stressed the importance of work ethic and family. In addition to their dedication to business the Wergers’ have shown a steadfast commitment to all forms of charity. Both Werger brothers and their respective wives Janet and Shelley give their time and talents ...to safeguard numerous fundraising endeavors not withstanding the challenges tethered to communal projects. Their involvement with the Kidney Foundation began over 17 years ago when Allen and Janets’ daughter, Lisa was diagnosed with kidney disease. As the disease progressed, Lisa became in need of a transplant. Her younger brother, Dr. Jeffrey Werger stepped forward and courageously donated a kidney to his sister. Unfortunately this is not where the Werger families end their attachment to kidney disease. It’s been nearly 5 years now when Jerry Werger was also diagnosed with acute kidney failure. Jerry spent months on dialysis under the care of Dr. Michelle Hladunewich. Just as Dr. Michelle had promised, Jerry miraculously came off dialysis. In gratitude, the two Werger families donated an Exam room in the Kidney Care Centre at the CNIB , honoring Dr. Hladunewich. The Wergers’ are committed to continue their support of the Kidney Foundation. #NationalPhilanthropyDay
