Two facts we often talk about are the importance of visiting your dentist for regular exams and cleanings, and taking care of your teeth at home! ... However, did you know any of the five cool teeth facts we shared in this video? A smile is one of your best accessories, so it’s important that you take good care of your teeth, mouth and gums! You don't have to show some love to all your teeth, just the ones you want to keep! It's important to floss and brush your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste twice daily! Having a good oral hygiene routine is one of the best ways to keep your oral health in check. If you or your child is undergoing orthodontic treatment, there might be a few extra steps to keep your teeth clean. With braces, we recommend our patients brush all around each of the brackets to ensure removal ...of all plaque and food debris. You should also place your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle above and below the braces at the gum line to maintain healthy gums! Make sure to spend a little bit more time to maintain good oral health! Along with a good at-home oral hygiene routine, it's important to visit us on a biannual basis. Our Markham, Richmond Hill, and Stouffville locations are all ready to check in on your smile! We welcome all patients to call or email us at [email protected]! #KDG #KidsDentalGroup #PediatricDentistry #Orthodontics #Stouffville #markhammoms #richmondhillmoms #stouffvillemoms #oralhygiene #oralhealth #oralhealthmonth

Tooth decay in infants and young children is often referred to as baby bottle tooth decay. Did you know that tooth decay is the most common childhood chronic disease in Canada? Baby bottle tooth decay occurs when sweetened liquids or those with natural sugars cling to an infant's teeth for long periods of time. This bacteria can then produce acids that attack your child's teeth leading to tooth decay! There are certain things parents can do to help their child avoid to...oth decay from developing. It's important to clean your baby's mouth with a soft cloth after feeding with breastmilk or formula. Parents should also avoid using sippy cups with anything other than water, especially during bedtime! If your child does have a sweet drink, make sure to brush their teeth soon after or drink water to avoid tooth decay! We can help make sure your child's smile is on track! Along with a good at-home oral hygiene routine, we recommend bringing in your child for a visit every six months. To book your child’s next check-up, please call or email us at [email protected]! #KDG #KidsDentalGroup #PediatricDentistry #Orthodontics #Stouffville #markhammoms #richmondhillmoms #stouffvillemoms #oralhygiene #babybottletoothdecay #toothdecay

What’s not a funny joke is crooked teeth! Did you know Kids Dental Group offers braces to help fix a number of problems, including cross bites, crowding, spacing, overbites and narrow jaws? It does however, allow you to have a better understanding of potential orthodontic treatment your little one may need in the future! Don’t rush when you brush! Happy World Health Day everyone! Oral health has a direct effect on your overall health! Tooth loss and cavities are directly associated with a poor diet. Cavities can cause both pain and discomfort for children. They can also lead to infections which can cause problems with eating, speaking and learning. Poor oral hygiene habits can also have a negative effect on a child's progression in school, and their education due to more at home sick d...ays. Poor dental hygiene can also cause impaired physical appearance, resulting in a lack of confidence and development of social norms and relationships. The good news is that you can help prevent your children from getting cavities! Making sure your children floss and brush their teeth twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste in addition to regular dental appointments, will help fight cavities! It’s okay to snack on the sweets that the Easter Bunny left you, but just remember that sugar has a direct connection to tooth decay! The Canadian Dental Association recommends that children complete their first dental examination by the time they turn one, or when their first tooth erupts. We know one-year-old may seem young to some parents, but it’s in your child’s best interest to start bringing them to the dentist early on! Here are a few things you can do to help prepare your child for their first dental visits: 1. Fami...liarize your child with the dentist by showing them dental-themed books and TV shows. 2. Don’t forget to bring your child’s favourite toy, blanket or comfort item! This can help to calm them down if they’re showing any signs of anxiety. 3. It’s completely natural for infants to suck on their thumb or use a pacifier for comfort. For most babies, these habits will provide a sense of security and help them relax. Did you know that tooth decay is the most common childhood chronic disease in Canada and around the world? There are certain things parents can do to help their child avoid tooth decay and developing cavities. Parents should start caring for their child’s oral hygiene from the moment they are born. Breastmilk and formula contain sugar, so parents are advised to clean their baby’s mouth with a soft cloth. Once children are old enough to brush their teeth, they shoul...d be using toothpaste that contains fluoride. The fluoride can help fight tooth decay and cavities by making tooth enamel stronger. There is a direct connection between sugar and cavity-causing bacteria. It’s fine to treat children to a sugary snack on occasion, but just make sure they brush their teeth soon after to avoid any problems later on! To make sure your child’s smile stays healthy and cavity-free, it’s recommended you bring them to see a dentist every six months. Did you know that there is no doctor referral needed for an orthodontic check-up at Kids Dental Group! With the back-to-school season in full swing, now would be a good time to bring your child in for a visit! The Canadian Association of Orthodontists recommend that children have their first appointment with an orthodontist by the time they turn 7. If you have a child starting grade two, three or four, it’s time for you to contact us! The reason why it’s so import...ant for kids to come in for a check-up is so we can look at their oral development. If there’s any problems, we can intervene with treatment before it becomes a larger issue. Early orthodontic treatment can reduce or even eliminate the need for treatment later in life! Even if you have a child that’s a bit older, it’s never too late for their first orthodontic appointment! Does your child love to play sports? With kids being back in school, it might be time to consider getting them a customized mouthguard or sportsguard! Parents should teach their child to wear a mouthguard as a proper safety precaution - just like wearing a seatbelt in a car or a helmet while riding a bike! There are certain sports that can put your child at risk for serious dental and jaw damage. A mouthguard can help protect your child from broken teeth as well as... injuries to their tongue, gums, lips and face. As stated by the Canadian Dental Association, a mouthguard also acts as a cushion to prevent broken jaws, neck injuries and concussions. We want to help keep your child’s smile protected and healthy! Who has teeth and can eat a lot? Children! It’s important that parents are feeding their children healthy and nutritious snacks throughout the day. Kids who have high-in-sugar diets can have an increased risk for oral problems! A Canadian Health Measures Survey reported that 57% of six to 11 year old children have had a cavity - making tooth decay the most common childhood disease. Tooth decay and cavities will start to develop if oral hygiene is neglected. Bacteria will start to eat away to your child's tooth enamel and cavities will start to appear. Depending on the location, you might be able to physically see the cavity inside your child’s mouth. An early cavity will appear a light brow...n and darken as the cavity gets worse. One of the most common questions we get from parents is what type of toothpaste should I buy for my child? No matter what brand of toothpaste you buy your child, whether it be @colgate or @crest, make sure it contains fluoride. Fluoride can help prevent cavities in both children and adults as well as strengthen teeth. It’s important to supervise and assist your child in brushing their teeth until they are about six years old. You want to make sure that your little... one isn't swallowing any toothpaste as it can upset their stomach and lead to other problems. You should start brushing your child’s teeth as soon as their first one surfaces. You will only need a rice grain amount of toothpaste until they are about three years old. By the time your child turns 3 years old, they should have all their baby teeth. At this point, you can start using a pea sized amount of toothpaste when assisting in brushing their teeth. The next time you come in for an appointment, we would be happy to provide you with some tips for your little one’s oral hygiene routine!
