An early childhood educator is one of the most under valued professions. Many mistake an ECE for a babysitter, not a teacher. But the truth is, we are the greatest teachers of all. We teach children self worth, we build them up, and allow them to explore in a way that is individualized. We seek out each child’s strengths and interests, and design each day around them to allow them to excel.... We wipe their tears, we hold them tight while their sad, we laugh with them, we jump up and down with them when their excited, we empathize with them, we teach them emotions and how to express them. We often teach them life skills, like potty training and still encourage them when an accident happens, we do not give up, but keep going, how to dress and undress themselves, how to put on and take off their shoes, proper nutritional habits, how to share, but most importantly how to reach for the stars. We wipe noses, little bums, scrapes and bo-bo’s. We maintain clean programs (without a janitor), we keep each child’s item organized, we know each child’s shoes, jacket, and special security object, and ensure they make it home each day. We engage with all children in the program, while we comfort and reassure a child while they cry for their mom or dad. We learn and get to know each family on a personal level, and reassure parents their little is safe and well cared for. We ensure we implement parental beliefs and requests, while following the facilities program statement. We identify Red Flags, and have those difficult meetings with parents, breaking the news but yet setting up a path for their child to succeed. We create and implement ISP’s and MSP’s when needed. We design programs and activities around each child’s interest. We do this on our own time, outside of our 8 hour day shift, to ensure the next day is set up and ready for the children. And we do it without complaint, without striking, without demanding more. We do it for the children! After all, isn’t that what it’s all about??? This post could go on and on to recognize the importance of an Early Childhood Educator.
