| Understanding the WHY | . When managing and dealing with behaviours that our children experience, what I noticed is that we sometimes only focus on the behaviour itself. For example hitting, biting, scratching etc. And when we only focus on the behaviour we may feel burnt out or disempowered . When we look a little deeper and look for the WHY (often what we don’t see) we can then put EFFECTIVE strategies and tools in place that will leave both you and your child feeling emp...owered! . Some of the reasons we see behaviour: Physiological/Biological Reasons- Are our kids sick, hungry, tired or has there been any changes at home, daycare or school? Lack of skill- As Robert Greene says kids do well if they can, and if they can’t something is getting in the way and that something maybe a skill that needs to be taught! Avoid or escape- this could manifest itself when we ask our children to transition to an un preferred activity. Looking for attention or connection from us Sensory Input- Our children can be over or under stimulated to any of our 7 senses! To obtain an item- If our children want something from a peer or sibling a behaviour may be the way they obtain this item ie hit, bite, scratch or take from their hands . Keeping in mind that our children’s behaviour can be more than just 1 of these reasons. We may notice that 2 or more of the reason above are WHY our children are engaging in behaviour. . When we see past the actual behaviour itself and get to the root of the the behaviour that’s when we will create LONG lasting changes! . Knowing and seeing the WHY will shift the way we not only respond to the behaviour but will drastically change HOW we intervene! . Drop a in the comments if this is a helpful tool when navigating behaviour!
