A little bit of joy to help us through this time. I invite each of you to think about one thing that has brought you joy in the last 24 hours, or recently and post it here. I will invite all of you each day to reflect and smile. To build resilience, we need to be active in its pursuit.... Let us build a community of hugs, handshakes, and contagious smiles. Joy is defined as a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. Day Two Watercolour painting with Nate Barton during our Writing Medicine Workshop online. It was such a joyful peace. An hour went by as I experienced ‘flow’. I remembered how much I enjoyed making art. Thank you #writingmedicine #resilience #joy #art #watercolour #flow #ot

Consistent routines will help your child and their ‘body clocks’ with many day-to-day basics such as: - Ability to take naps and sleep well at night - Ability to eat healthy, full meals - Regular bowel movements... - Emotional regulation - Organization & time management skills - Establishing constructive habits & self-discipline required for physical & mental health. . . The primary benefits are an increased sense of security and independence for activities that are routinely practiced. Routines provide stability in uncertain times. Furthermore, values are communicated by the meaningful activities we chose to prioritize. Consistency in terms of structure and routine provides limits and boundaries for children. These help them to organize and integrate information into their brain and gain an understanding of how the world works (CDC, 2019). . . . I have teamed up with two of the best pediatric OTs I know (Shannon Rolph @shannon.rolph.ot and Nicole Raftis) to support families through this challenging time. Our self-paced course, Pandemic Parenting Burnout: Meaningful Tools for Health and Hope, is now open! If you want to learn more, sign up at the link in my bio. . . I'm really interested to know if you usually follow a routine or rhythm in your home? What about during lockdowns/school closures? Does that change? . . . . . . . . . . . . #occupation #meaning #consistency #routines #resilience #hope #pandemicburnout #parenting #pandemicparenting #parentinginapandemic #routinesforkids #consistencymatters #paediatricot #paediatricoccupationaltherapy #ot #guelphmoms #guelph #guelphdads #parenting #teach #learn #kids #children #play #happy #positivevibes #kitchener #waterloo #kw #fun See more

Day Five 7 cars. I counted train cars. I decided today to instead of being irritated by being stopped on the road by the train that I would count the cars. I remember when I was little that when a train passed by it was a momentous and awe-inspiring event. I would sit there silently counting and counting and marvelled at how many cars an engine could pull. The best part was getting to the caboose! Excited to launch our first online workshop in collaboration with Nicole Raftis, OT and Shannon Rolph, OT. Children and youth have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic, even though #COVID19 infection does not represent a serious physical threat to most of... them. School closures have precipitated a mass of unintended consequences, underscoring the importance of educational settings to the overall health and well-being of children and youth. That's why we're calling on all levels of government to make in-person schooling a priority in the coming months. Learn more here: https://www.cps.ca/u/advocacy/2020_Sept_School_Advocacy.pdf See more

You know what's better than saying "this food is good for you"? Tell them what foods do in their body! Why do I keep sharing this message? Because we keep selli...ng our kids short labeling foods and good/bad, healthy/unhealthy. Here are some examples of messages I like for different ages: For 2-3yo kids I usually break it down by color. Although it's not 100% accurate, it’s a good framework to get started. Red: gives you a strong heart Orange: helps you see in the dark Yellow: helps your body heal cuts Green: gives you super powers to fight off sickness Blue and Purple: Give you a strong brain White: gives you energy For 4s and 5s you can start being more specific - like carrots and sweet potatoes help you be able to see in the dark. Clementines help your skin heal cuts. Broccoli helps your night vision, your skin heal, AND your bones be strong. For 4s/5s and 6s you can introduce the idea that some foods do a lot of things in their bodies and some foods do a few things. For 6s and 7s you can introduce the concept of vitamins and minerals - tell them HOW carrots protect their night vision (via vitamin A). Learn about the body. For 8s and 9s - learn even more about different things in foods. And so on. All the while, model the way you want your kids to eat in your home and serve them the balanced diet you want them to eat. That's more powerful than anything you could ever tell them. If you need help getting your child to try new foods, my free child eating guide From Stress to Success - 4 Ways to Help Your Child Eat Better without Losing Your Mind is in my bio @kids.eat.in.color #kidseatincolor See more

I had a goose wandering out front of our office like this early Spring!
Back to school this year is ideal for NO ONE. Not for teachers. Not for parents. Hybrid is not ideal. Virtual is not ideal.... Face-to-face in the midst of a pandemic is not ideal. For every kid who is anxious to get back to the classroom there is another who has anxiety about returning. For every parent who wonders, How am I going to manage this? There is a teacher wondering, How am I going to manage this? Often, a person wears both titles. For every kindergarten parent who is sad that this is how their child will begin their education, there is a parent of a senior who is bummed that this is how their child will end theirs. For every person angry about their child having to wear a mask, there is a person who is petrified their immune compromised family member will get ill. Life has thrown us a huge curve ball. A plot twist if you will. It will not be easy. We will be challenged. We will get frustrated. I hope we rise to the occasion. I hope we help one another. We will all need help. I hope we treat each other with grace. We will all need grace. I hope we realize that at the end of the day, our kids need us to be the light. Set the tone. See the good. Take a really unfortunate situation and do our best to make it okay. For them. For us. - Stephanie Krause

On August 17th, we’ll be tuning into Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood: Won’t You Sing Along with Me?, a new special that helps address some of the challenges and d...isappointments children and their families may be experiencing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the special, when Daniel learns he can’t gather with all of his neighbors at the Neighborhood Carnival this year, it leads to a lot of big feelings and questions, including what to do when he misses the people he loves, how to keep himself and others healthy, and how to find ways to enjoy the extra time at home with his family. Mom and Dad Tiger use new and fan-favorite songs from the series to help reassure him as well as young viewers and their parents at home, who are encouraged to sing along! http://www.pbs.org//new-daniel-tigers-neighborhood-specia/
