Fun Science Time! Magic Milk Experiment is a super simple activity and your child(ren)will be amazed! Watch the video below for the instructions. ... Here is a short explanation of what happens: "Milk is made up of minerals, proteins and fats. When the dish soap enters the milk the fat begins to break up. The soap molecules run around and try to attach to the fat molecules in the milk. Normally this process would be invisible to you, but the food coloring helps you to see all of the movement taking place."- Funlearningforkids.com

Kids’ brains are underdeveloped. When they’re struggling, particularly with something you’ve asked of them, they often don’t have the words to say Can you help... me? or I don’t know how. They say this with their behaviour. Yet, often we are expecting them to oblige or comply because we said so, or at this time of year, because otherwise Santa won’t bring them a present, a fun holiday event will be cancelled, the Elf on the Shelf is watching, or they’ll go on the naughty list. The thing is, using these threats do not give a child the tools that they need to do better. And sometimes we’re expecting change that their age and stage of brain development suggests isn’t possible. The threats do not do anything for a child but break down their connection and trust with the adult who has these expectations, and make them feel bad about themselves for not meeting them, when they literally can’t. It teaches kids that they are loved and accepted based on their outward behaviour, and that the way they behave is dictated by the rewards they receive. Of course, a well-behaved child would make the festive season much easier for us, especially when we’re often under a lot of stress ourselves. However, as adults, we're the ones with the mature brains capable of emotional regulation and problem-solving (even though we won’t be able to do this 100% of the time), not our toddlers; not even our teenagers. I understand that a simple reminder that the Elf of the Shelf is watching can quickly make a child behave. But remember that a child who has been threatened and looks well-behaved on the outside, is likely still feeling stressed on the inside, and is trying to keep it together for the sake of pleasing others, and for the sake of Christmas. We talk about behaviour as if it were a choice - but oftentimes, it isn’t. You’re not a bad parent if you use these threats. This is just some information based on what we now know about child development that you might like to consider. What can you do instead? It’s the same as any other time of year. Remember that all behaviour is communication. Empathise. Connect before you correct. Reframe attention-seeking to connection-seeking. Co-regulate. I’ve covered this in many previous posts and on my blog. And yes, you can still use Elf on the Shelf without the behaviour patrol aspect! Also, don’t forget, you’re not going to get it right 100% of the time - no one can. Doing what you can with the resources you have is enough. #Repost from Perth Children's Occupational Therapy https://www.facebook.com/perthchildrensOT/ GenMindful.com | Raising An Emotionally Healthy World

We still have space for you to join our Virtual Book Club! We will be meeting over Zoom on Wednesdays from 7:30pm - 8:30pm for six weeks beginning on March 3rd.... Please email Nancy Hurley at [email protected] to register today! The book, "Self-Reg", by Dr. Shanker is available at Indigo online for $20. If you would like to participate and purchasing the book yourself would be a barrier to participating, let us know and we'll help out Here is a what a member of our 2020 Spring Book Club shared. "Sometimes an opportunity arises that doesn't quite fit with your schedule, but you know that the payoff will be well worth the extra effort. Taking part in the Self-Reg Book Club through The Old Millbrook School EarlyON Child and Family Centre was exactly this! Finding time to read the chapters and attend the weekly Zoom calls seemed like a BIG commitment (keep in mind this is during the pandemic before we had really found our routine), but in reality the content was engaging and enjoyable. By the time I was a few Zoom calls and chapters deep, I was already noticing many positive changes not only in my child, but myself as well as the relationship between my partner and child (I would give him a quick summary after each call). Now., when we experience hiccups in relation to behaviour we ask ourselves is this a misbehaviour or a stress behaviour? Why now? Plus, Nancy is a wonderful, caring, and supportive guide for the Self-Reg Book Club. If you are looking to find more balance in your family's life, make the time for this amazing book club, plus the other parents you meet along the way is a wonderful bonus." - Melanie

Police asking for Public’s Assistance: Peterborough Police are asking parents and guardians to take a moment have an important conversation with their children ...after an incident on Tuesday night at the recent fire scene. On September 22, 2020 at approximately 9:30 p.m. police were called by security to attend the fire scene at 369 Hunter Street West as there was a report that a 13 year old gained entry to the burnt building. Upon arrival police located an insecure door however there was no one located inside. The door has since been secured. Police strongly urge the public to remain away from the fragile structure as it is extremely unsafe. When Police officers and Fire fighters have to re-enter the unsafe structure to look for curious individuals, it puts them at a very high risk for injury.

Look at the differences between a typical preschool child’s hand (left) and a typical 7 year old hand (right). Want to know why a preschool aged child isn’t a...ble to write yet? This is why! Their hands are still developing and are not fully formed. So what should they be doing to support this? PLAY!! Playdough, colouring, cutting, gluing, playing outside, digging in dirt, sensory play, dress up play, science experiments, beading, puzzles, throwing balls, etc. . All of these things help their hands develop. When they are physically ready to write, they will! No need to rush them, they will show you when they are ready. via @Raisingherbarefoot
