Leeon learning how to use syllabics with our set of acrylic syllabic symbols as part of his native language class. Here, he spelled out names of his classmates I'm not sure how well "Ian" translates into Ojibwe syllabics, but I hope it's close! Syllabics are an interesting form of writing symbols represent different vowel and consonant sounds, where the sounds change depending on the orientation of the symbol. Syllabics are so intuitive to use that by the late 19th century the Cree had achieved one of the highest rates of literacy in the world using them for written language.
