IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO KPDC MEMBERS AND KILCONA DOG PARK FRIENDS On Friday the Province and the City of Winnipeg made two separate COVID-19 related announcements that will impact KPDC'S activities over the next few months. The City announced that, as the public health risk continues, park bookings for over 50 people have been cancelled through July 1 and that no new parks bookings will be accepted until further notice. Permits issued for special events and festivals have also b...een suspended. In making the announcement, Mayor Bowman said the City and Province expect social distancing to be in effect for weeks and into months. That means KPDC will not be able to host Winnipeg Dog Fest as planned on June 7. Our board will have to wait until July to see if the City begins issuing permits again to determine if we can go with our rain date - August 29. In that context, we've noted that the Assistant Chief of Emergency Management has echoed the mayor, saying that social-distancing may remain in effect for a long time to come. At the same time, the Province announced that starting today, gatherings will be restricted to a maximum of 10 people, down from 50. The restriction applies to indoor and outdoor gatherings, which means KPDC'S annual spring clean-up is also off the table. While Toronto and other cities have closed their dog parks,Winnipeg's remain open, in the City's words "for now".. In the interest of public health and safety, the City reminds dog park users to practise social distancing by following to 2-metre (6-foot) guideline. And since Kilcona's dog park community can't gather for the spring clean-up, we all need to be extra-diligent in picking up after our own dogs and taking extra bags to pick up the winter's "leftovers". Royal LePage Prime, KPDC and park staff will continue to co-ordinate Kilcona Dog Park's waste bag program Stay safe! Donna Henry President - KPDC Inc.

Kilcona Park Dog Club has received another report of meat left at the park. This time it was a large, flattened half-cooked chicken breast that Kaila Wiebe's Golden Retriever picked up near the parking lot. .Kaila managed to get the meat and throw it in a garbage can before her dog swallowed it. This is one of several reports that KPDC, MB Sustainable Development and Parks and Open Space have recently received about meat and bones being left at the park, and dog kibble being ...left by the map. None of the food was turned in so we do not know if any of it was tainted. What we do know is that leaving meat in a dog park - whether it's for dogs or wildlife - is a recipe for disaster. For good reasons human and animal food is banned from dog parks in many communities. Here's why. * While your own dog may be well-behaved around food, the presence of food can create competition and prompt aggressive behavior between other dogs. * Dogs may act aggressively toward a person if they pick up the scent of the food s/he is carrying or eating. * Dogs may have allergic reactions to certain foods. Not to put too fine a point on it, but a common allergen is chicken, like the piece Kaila's dog picked up. * A dog that is accustomed to eating food it finds at a dog park is at greater risk of getting sick or even dying from eating tainted meat. * Finally, a friendly reminder that Kilcona has its own resident coyote population. These shy animals avoid humans and are almost never seen in the off-leash area. Leaving meat, bones and kibble out is a sure way to habituate them, reduce their natural fear of humans, and encourage them to hang out in the dog park on a regular basis. We ask Kilcona dog owners to be vigilant. If you find meat or bones at the park, bag them and save them for testing. Email [email protected] or call 204-947-5315. Please help keep our dog park community safe by sharing this post.
